THE MATCH WAS FIXED IN OUR FAVOUR

Genesis 3:15
And I will put enmity
between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and hers;
he will crush your head,
and you will strike his heel.”

A match is a competition that seeks to find a winner and a loser. All teams can’t win. Everyone can’t win. Someone must win and another one must lose. To fix a match in our games context is a fraud. To fix a match is to determine the winner and the loser before the competition begins. When people fix matches, the loser is paid heavily so that they play in a manner that they lose the game and accept defeat. When people fix matches the winner is favoured during the game and without much effort on their side, they win the game. The winners in a fixed match are not true winners. The winners in a fixed match won before the game and not during the game. The match was fixed in our favour!

Matches are fixed to favour gamblers. Matches are fixed to determine who a team plays with next. Matches are fixed for many and various reasons. The bottom line of match fixing is that results are determined before the real game. How the players play doesn’t matter, what matters is which team they are in. The results were predetermined. The match was fixed in our favour!

We are in a match of life. The winner gets eternal life. The loser gets eternal damnation. Everyday we are playing for this or that team. There are only two teams that we can be part of. This match has no human spectators, every human being is a player. It is the great controversy between Christ and Satan. Christ is the stronger and more powerful opponent here and it has already been predetermined that His team will win and satan’s team will lose. Regardless of how the game goes, the results are predetermined. The match was fixed in our favour!

Our text today contains the words of God to players of opposing sides in the grand match of life. The serpent had just deceived Adam and Eve into disobeying God and eating the forbidden fruit. By this disobedient act, Adam and Eve accepted to join the match which God wanted to prevent them from. But since they had already joined the match, God decided to fix the results. God declared that, whoever will be on His side, will score as follows, they will crush the head of their opponent. Whoever was against God, will score as follows, they will only bruise the heel of their opponent. The match was fixed! The results had already been determined. Team woman against team serpent. Team woman for God. Team serpent for satan. The scores were determined before the game continues, team serpent gives a mere heel bruise and team woman gives a fatal head crush. The match was fixed in our favour!

What matters in a match fixing situation is to be in the winning team. It doesn’t matter how the game is played, the winner is already determined. In match fixing you don’t look at how good a player or a team is/was, you look at the predetermined results. Team woman, the church, God’s people, are predetermined to win by all means. Team serpent is the losing team from the beginning. Wisdom is joining the winning team and not looking at how the game is going on. The match was fixed in our favour!

God and His team must win, not because there is a chance of them losing, no! God must win because it is His world, His creation and He wishes to restore it to Himself. God has power over satan, whom He created as a good angel lucifer. But satan is supernatural and God’s people who were duped into joining the match are natural. Without God’s intervention, we human beings can’t successfully play against satan, we will lose instantly. On our own against satan, we have lost, before the match begins. God knowing the disadvantage facing us, intervened in this unfair match that was bound to destroy us. God said, He will help His people, and by that help, we will never ever lose the match. God stepped into a match that was unfairly against us and He brought a power greater than satan, and by that power He fixed the match in our favour. The match was fixed in our favour!

If we remain on God’s side, Apostle Paul tells us in Romans 8:37 that we are more than conquerers. We have already won. Nothing in this life will change our ultimate victory. 1 Peter 1:6-7 tells us that we may suffer some pain and trouble, but ultimately we will emerge winners. The small pain and trouble are just bruises on the heel. The match is fixed! The small injuries during the game will not change the final results. The match is already fixed in our favour. Romans 8:18 Apostle Paul tells us that our present suffering cannot compare to the glory of victory awaiting us. We are suffering in this match. We get embarrassed by enemy manoeuvres. We get injured when the enemy plays rough. It seems that the game is tipped against us and we get stressed. During this stress, Bible writers remind us that, don’t be stressed over what happens during the match, we are winners. The match was fixed in our favour!

2 Corinthians 12:7-10. During the match of his life, Apostle Paul had the enemy drive a thorn in his flesh. Apostle Paul was afraid that this thorn in his flesh will cause him to lose the match. He pleaded with God to intervene and remove the thorn. God told Apostle Paul that all he needs is grace to remain in the match to the end, because that thorn will not affect the predetermined results. When Apostle Paul discovered that the thorn was painful but had no effect on final results, he changed his attitude. Apostle Paul now rejoiced in sufferings, in persecutions, in pain, because he was already a winner. The match was fixed in our favour!

Regardless of what happens, remain in the game, and in the team of God, you will win. That is why Job declared during his suffering, Job 13:15, that even if God kills him, He will remain faithful to God, because this is the winning team. The secret is to remain on God’s side, and just remain in the game, the results were fixed long ago. That is why the three Hebrew boys told the king of Babylon not to waste time convincing them to worship an idol. Daniel 3:16-18, Shadrack, Meshack and Abednego told Nebuchadnezar that God is able to save them from fire, and even if God doesn’t save them, they will remain on God’s side and will not join satan by worshipping the king’s idol. These gentlemen knew the match was already fixed. The match was fixed in our favour!

What is going on in your life today? Are you on God’s team? Remain on God’s team. Don’t give up, don’t quit, regardless of what the enemy does, the match is fixed and you will come out victorious. That is why Jesus was not happy that His disciples were afraid of the storm. With Jesus in the boat, the match with the storm is already fixed, the storm will lose and the boat that has Jesus will win. Mark 4:40, Jesus asked them, why are you afraid, why do you lack faith, yet the match is already fixed! The match was fixed in our favour!

Are you sick? The match is already fixed in your favour. Are you lonely? The match is already fixed in your favour. Are you discriminated against? The match is already fixed in your favour. Are you in a business or employment with low future prospects? The match is already fixed in your favour. Are you in a hurting relationship and every day brings more and more pain? The match is already fixed in your favour. Are there people scheming to bring you down, destroy you and embarrass you? Let them carry on, don’t interfere with them. The match is already fixed in your favour. Have you done your best academically but your understanding and grades are still low? Keep doing your best. The match is already fixed in your favour. Remain on God’s side. Remain prayerful. Remain hopeful. Remain in Bible study and believing what you study. Remain in the game and do what you must to your studies, do what you must to your loneliness, do what you must to your marriage, do what you must to your employment and business, do what you must… The match was fixed in our favour!

Any failure or frustration we experience today from people or circumstances, is just a bruise on our heel. That is the most that can happen. At the end we shall crush the head of the opponent. The match was fixed in our favour!

Thank you God for fixing the match in our favour. Thank you for fixing our daily matches and our ultimate match. Help us to remain faithful to you and to remain in the game. May we live our lives like people who know that the match is already fixed in their favour. In Jesus name, Amen!

I sit in church or religious class and I struggle to understand what is being taught and preached. I realise a few other people are struggling too. The meeting ends and we are satisfied with having appeared. Somehow in my mind I decide that only a few people can ever learn and understand certain things. But this is not right. I read scholars' articles on very serious issues, the vocabulary is deep, the language is way above the average member of the church. My mind wonders and struggles with, how can this be simplified for everybody? God's word cannot be a preserve of only a few people. So at some point in my life, I resolved that it is my mission to make things simpler that even the least educated and youngest child can understand the word of God. Apart from my love for grey colours, traveling and eating chapati, I have a passion for teaching, preaching and simplifying everything for those I address. My continuous worry, is always, was it simple enough for everybody?
