Ephesians 6:18 In the same way, prayer is essential in this ongoing warfare. Pray hard and long. Pray for your brothers and sisters. Keep your eyes open. Keep each other’s spirits up so that no one falls behind or drops out. (Message Bible)
Ephesians 6:19 And don’t forget to pray for me. Pray that I’ll know what to say and have the courage to say it at the right time, telling the mystery to one and all, the Message that I,
Ephesians 6:20 jailbird preacher that I am, am responsible for getting out. (Message Bible)
Ephesians 6:18 – And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. (NIV)
Ephesians 6:19 – Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel,
Ephesians 6:20 – for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should. (NIV)
A multipurpose tool means it can do more than one thing. If you have it, you may not need other tools. A multipurpose tool is convenient, cost effective and a must have item.
Prayer is a multipurpose tool. Prayer can do much more than we probably limit it to be able to do in our minds. If we understood what else prayer is able to do, we would passionately and consistently be prayerful. We would pray without ceasing.
In the last section of the letter to Ephesians, Apostle Paul writes about the armour a Christian should wear. We are in a spiritual battle and without the amour the enemy will destroy us. We need the amour as listed. Immediately after the amour he writes about prayer and presents its various functions and it proves to be a multipurpose weapon or tool.
Pray in all occasions. Whatever you are doing – pray. Pray gets God involved in your work. If you are to work with God in what you are doing – pray. If you have an exam and you want God to help you – pray. If you are dating and you need to be sure if you are making the proper decision – pray. If you have made an investment and you are waiting for income, you involve God by praying for it. The Bible says, pray in all occasions.
If you are happy pray and thank God for it. If you are sad, seek solace in prayer. If you are feeling neither this nor that, pray that you will feel better and confident. If you feel confused pray. If you feel confident and sure – pray. Prayer is involving God in all that you go through. Pray in all occasions the Bible tells us today.
Pray when you feel far away from God. Pray when you don’t know how to pray. If you do not what to tell God, call on Him and just pause then say Amen. It shall be well. Prayer brings you to the throne of grace, God’s throne. When you are angry, express your anger in prayer. Pray in all occasions the Bible tells us today!
All kinds of prayer are welcome. Prayers of anger. Prayers of frustration. Prayers of confusion. Prayers for faith. Prayers seeking God to revenge for some hurt you are going through. Prayers of joy. Prayers of thanks. Prayers of praise. Prayers of happiness. The Bible tells us today that we should pray all kinds of prayer.
Pray for all God’s people. To show love and being part of fellowship, pray for everyone. You cant claim to love people and you don’t pray for them. You can’t be a church member who doesn’t pray for fellow members. Show commitment to the church and love for others by praying for them. Prayer is fellowship!
Job 1:5 – When a period of feasting had run its course, Job would make arrangements for them to be purified. Early in the morning he would sacrifice a burnt offering for each of them, thinking, “Perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.” This was Job’s regular custom.
Job did parenting by prayer. Children were grown up and made their own decisions. He intervened and parented them by regular prayer. He showed love for his children by praying for EACH of them. Do you love anyone? Show it by regularly and passionately praying for them. Pray for your darlings and sweethearts. Pray for your babes. Pray for your mommy and daddy. Pray for your spouses, parents and your children. Demonstrate love for each other by regularly, not once in a while, but regularly praying for each other!
Prayer is a multipurpose tool. That is why you pray in all occasions. That is why it is a show of fellowship. That is why it is a sign of commitment to the church. Further more, prayer is a multipurpose tool because it is a love language. You show love by praying for those you love.
Apostle Paul ends the Ephesians pericope on prayer by asking the church to pray for him. Prayer is a multipurpose tool. Prayer demonstrates loyalty. If you are loyal to your leaders as you should be, then pray for them. Our leaders disappoint us sometimes and it could be because we have not prayed for them. Our leaders fail and we consequently fail with them because we don’t pray for them.
Paul tells the church to pray for his preaching. He says pray for what I preach that I may get words from God. Pray for how I preach that I may do it courageously. We should pray for preachers and not just criticize.
Sermons are long in unhealthy ways because we don’t pray for preachers. Sermons that should be simple and clear and end in thirty to forty minutes, end up going for two hours. The preacher is addressing every topic and the congregation is tired but keeps going. Simply because we only complain but don’t pray for the preacher.
If time has been wasted by disorganized people and the preacher must preach and time is far spent – pray for that preacher, that is a difficult moment to preach. Pray for confused preachers. Pray for boring preachers. Pray for preachers, it is a tool that will fix bad sermons and bad preachers. Prayer is a multipurpose tool!
If you think preachers are not preaching enough of your favorite topic of present truth, criticism may make you look good but it’s not Christian nor helpful. Pray that God will reveal to the preachers what to preach. Bear in mind you can’t dictate what God tells you. After you pray, accept what God brings your way. Prayer is a multipurpose tool.
Prayer does not replace the work that must be done. Pray and eat healthy. Pray and attend classes and study for exams. Pray and dress well. Pray and in addition do your best. Prayer is a tool. Tools requires someone to work with them. Work while praying, don’t just pray!
Luke 11:1 – One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”
This is our prayer today. My prayer today. Lord teach me how to pray. May prayer be my multipurpose tool. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
