Deuteronomy 4:7
What other nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way the LORD our God is near us whenever we pray to him?

There is a desire for greatness in each one of us. God created us with a desire and aim for that which is great. If we could become great, all of us would be great. We admire the great. we envy the great. We wish to be great. Yet our text today gives us an assured divine suggestion of how to be great. Prayer makes you great!

The Bible is an inspired book. The Bible is the word of God. The Bible, therefore, does not give suggestions that we go and try out. The Bible gives us the actual solution that works a hundred percent. Therefore this path to greatness is a sure path since the Bible says so. Prayer makes you great!

Moses tells the Israelites in our passage today that no nation is greater than Israel. This greatness is not from military power, political stability, or economic growth. This is greatness that comes from their closeness to God. The greatness of Israel is that they are so close to their God. God is supernatural and has unlimited knowledge, presence, and power. To be close to God is to have access to unlimited knowledge, presence, and power. If you are unlimited in such a manner, you are great.

Moses goes further to tell Israelites and us that, the closeness to God is at the time of prayer. At the moment of prayer, we are closest to God. At the moment of prayer, we link up with He who is unlimited. At the time of prayer, we are within the throne of God. That moment of prayer, our weak selves become mighty strong because we are in the presence of our unlimited God. Therefore at the moment of prayer, we are greatest. Prayer makes you great!

Prayer ushers us into the company of God. When we pray God is listening. When we pray we have the attention of God. When we pray attention of the entire heaven is on us. When we pray, we who are ordinary are allowed into the company of our super extraordinary God and His Angels. When we pray we surrender ourselves into the hands of a God for whom nothing is impossible. When we pray we are in the company of a God who has never known failure, He is ever successful. Prayer makes you great!

What happens when we stop praying? We jeopardize our own welfare. When we stop praying we are in constant danger. When we stop praying the devil can access us and finish us. When we stop praying any of our enemies can have a breakthrough in destroying us. When we stop praying we give those who dislike us an opportunity to excel and jeer us. When we stop praying, we are exposed dangerously and can easily be victims of an attack. When we stop praying, our health is compromised, our finances dwindle, our relationships go to the rocks and our relationship with God breaks down and guilt ravages us. When we stop praying we are finished.

1 Thessalonians 5:17 tells us to pray without ceasing. Be in a constant mode of prayer. Be in a constant relationship with God. Be in the mood to continue serving God. Continuously think about the things of God, His mission, His will, His plans and desires for you. Listen and sing religious songs. Read religious literature. Be in the continuous mode of prayer. You do other things while praying. That prayer moment locks us into an impenetrable capsule of safety and success. Prayer makes you great!

We are great when we pray and because we pray. Prayer links us to an excellent God. Prayer to a wrong god is not a source of power. Prayer without confession and repentance of sin is impotent. This understanding should make prayer our way of life. This understanding should make prayer time interesting and not boring. This understanding should give us the confidence to face a burning furnace, a den of lions, a stone-throwing mob, and even death. That confidence mesmerizes the world and you shoot to greatness. Prayer makes you great!

When we pray it is easy to forgive those who offend us. When we pray we don’t revenge. When we pray we easily turn the other cheek when struck. When we pray we trust God to give us success and not dishonest means. When we pray, nothing is impossible for us because nothing is impossible for our God. When we pray we can’t be paranoid worried about anyone planning to finish us. When we pray we do not see any defeat as permanent but as a temporary stepping stone to greater moments. Prayer makes you great!

Dear God, teach us to pray. Keep me in prayer mode all the days of my life, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
