The Most Important Prayer Request

2 Chronicles 6:24 – “When your people Israel have been defeated by an enemy BECAUSE THEY HAVE SINNED against you and when they turn back and give praise to your name, praying and making supplication before you in this temple,

2 Chronicles 6:26 – “When the heavens are shut up and there is no rain BECAUSE YOUR PEOPLE HAVE SINNED against you, and when they pray toward this place and give praise to your name and turn from their sin because you have afflicted them,

2 Chronicles 6:36-39 – “WHEN THEY SIN against you—for there is no one who does not sin —and you become angry with them and give them over to the enemy, who takes them captive to a land far away or near; and if they have a change of heart in the land where they are held captive, and repent and plead with you in the land of their captivity and say, ‘We have sinned, we have done wrong and acted wickedly’; and if they turn back to you with all their heart … hear their prayer and their pleas, and uphold their cause. And FORGIVE YOUR PEOPLE, who have sinned against you.

When Solomon prayed to dedicate the magnificent temple he made a long detailed prayer. That prayer tells us a lot about the kind of things we should pray for and how Israel understood their relationship with God. In this prayer emerges what we can call the most important prayer request.

The entire chapter of the Bible passages of our consideration today is mostly about the prayer of Solomon in details. Solomon prays about many things. Solomon makes many requests but one seems to stand out. The most important prayer request.

A prayer request is what you consider very important and should be prayed about. A prayer request is a summary of your urgent concerns that should be presented to God. A prayer request shows what really matters to you. Solomon’s prayer today seems to show the most important prayer request.

A prayer request can be presented to others so that they help you pray. A prayer request can also be your own private agenda in your personal prayer life. My prayer requests may be known by others or may never be known. Whichever way, Solomon seems to point us to the most important prayer request.

In the prayer of Solomon he suggests that many things go wrong in our lives because of sin. Well, we know that not everyone suffering is suffering because of some direct sin they committed. Some suffering are just temptations from the evil one. However, our attention goes to terrible situations that are a consequence of sin. This makes prayer for forgiveness of sin, the most important prayer request.

According to the prayer of Solomon, people are defeated at war because of sin. Not the failure of military strategy. Not the failure of Generals and Commanders. Not the superiority of enemy soldiers. Sin can and does bring defeat. Therefore, praying for forgiveness of sins becomes the most important prayer request.

According to the prayer of Solomon the weather may not be in favor of agricultural production. The weather affects crop production. The weather affects rearing of animals. The problem is not climate change because of pollution. The problem is it is a consequence of sin. No amount of conservation activities can change that. Unless sins are forgiven there will be no favorable environment for production. This makes praying for forgiveness of sins, the most important prayer request.

Solomon towards the end of prayer acknowledges that everybody sins. Disasters come because of sin. We suffer because of sin. We fail because of sin. Nothings seems to work even after we have done everything right, and this is because of sin. Seeking forgiveness for sins should be the most important prayer request.

Sin could be the reason behind health failure. Sin could be the reason behind a chaotic relationship. Sin could be the reason behind many of our efforts bearing no fruit. Sin could be the reason we have no peace of mind. Seeking forgiveness for sins should be the most important prayer request!

If sins are forgiven, many things will go right. If sins are forgiven the mysterious causes of defeat, failure and pain will be addressed. My situation and yours could be waiting to resolve if we only seek genuine forgiveness of sins. Make confession and repentance a critical prayer request.

Dear God, I am a sinner. My sins have offended You. My sins have caused me pain and suffering in known and unknown ways. Today my most important prayer request is that You forgive me my sins and its consequences, in Jesus’s name, Amen!
