Revelation 3:7-8
(7) “To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write:
These are the words of him who is holy and true, who holds the key of David. What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open. (8) I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.
The seven letters to the seven churches are also our letters. They were written to churches that actually existed. These churches also represent varied time periods from Pentecost to when Jesus returns. These churches also represent the state of the church at any time in history including now.
Each of these seven letters highlights a different nature or attribute of God. This implies that God reveals Himself in many and various circumstances that fit out needs at a particular moment. To those living in fear, He reveals Himself as chief security. To those feeling that someone is scheming against them, God reveals Himself as Chief Schemer who cannot be outfoxed. To those who are unwell, He is a healer. To those burdened by guilt and sin, He is the merciful Savior. In short, God is everything to all of us at all times!
In our text of consideration today, God is one who opens and shuts doors. It may seem that someone helped you and they deserve credit, but in reality, it is God who used them, and only He deserves credit. He opens and shuts doors and no one can undo His action.
The message here is interpreted to mean that the church will be given evangelistic opportunities and no one will stop the church. God will open an opportunity for the church to grow and no one will stop it. When God opens the opportunity for the church, even its enemies will support the church. Haters in their effort to stop the church will discover too late that their efforts to stop the church are actually accelerating its growth. When God opens a door, no one can shut it!
God opened a door for Joseph and Moses to be great, and they became great at different times in Egypt. A slave ruled Egypt because God could not be stopped. God opened the door for Esther to be queen in a foreign land and she became a queen. When God opens a door, no one can shut it!
David was forgotten when Samuel came to anoint a king, but God had opened a door for David and no one could shut it. When God shut the door of the Ark, no one could open it. When God sent Adam and Eve out of Eden, no one could return them back. If God opens it, it is open. When God shuts it is shut!
God shut the door for Beltshazar when it didn’t seem like he could be overthrown. That night he was overthrown. When God closes a door it is closed. Regardless of the circumstances, He is final!
If God has given you something, don’t live in fear, unless He says otherwise, it is yours for good. If God has denied you something, don’t fight. Regardless of the circumstances, He is final!
Some people may seem like they are final, don’t fear them, don’t believe them. God is the only final one that cuts across everything. Regardless of the circumstances, He is final!
How is your situation today? Do you want it to stay as it is and/or get better? God is final. Do you want some changes and improvements? God is final. All others in between have no influence and value. Regardless of the circumstances, He is final!
May God favor me with finality, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
