Lunar and Solar Eclipses, Are They End of The World Signs?

Matthew 24:29 (NIV) – “Immediately after the distress of those days “‘the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’

There are many signs of the soon coming end of the world. Some signs are about wars and rumors of war. Some signs are about growing immorality. Some signs are about falsehoods in the religious world- false prophets etc. Then there are signs in the physical world such as earthquakes, darkening of the Sun, changes in the moon and falling stars.

The following three different passages tell us about the end of the world and some of the signs to expect. These are signs to expect from the Sun, Moon and even stars.

Joel 2:31 (NIV) – The SUN will be turned to darkness and THE MOON TO BLOOD before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD.

Acts 2:17-21 (NIV) – 17 “‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people…18 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit …19 I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. 20 The SUN will be turned to darkness and THE MOON TO BLOOD before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord. 21 And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’

Revelation 6:12-13 (NIV) – 12 I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake. The SUN turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, THE WHOLE MOON TURNED BLOOD RED, 13 and the stars in the sky fell to earth, as figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind.

The question is, if we can explain the sign scientifically, does it cease to be a sign of the end of the world? If we can explain why war is taking place, does it mean that is not the war that signals that we are closer to the end of the world?

The scientific explanation of how a RAINBOW is formed is simple. When light passes through droplets of water, in this case rain droplets. If the light is behind you and the water droplets are in front of you, you may see the RAINBOW. Now let’s read the following passage on what God said about the RAINBOW.

Genesis 9:12-16 (NIV) – 12 And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: 13 I have set my RAINBOW in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the RAINBOW appears in the clouds, 15 I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. 16 Whenever the RAINBOW appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.”

God promised Noah and all human beings that He will not destroy the whole world with a flood again. The sign of His promise is a RAINBOW. Does this divine covenant become weak because we can explain how the RAINBOW is formed? Would this divine covenant become stronger if it was still a mystery how the RAINBOW is formed?

The fact that we can explain a phenomenon, doesn’t removes its spiritual meaning. We can explain how a RAINBOW is formed, but it is still God’s covenant with humanity. It is God who causes the RAINBOW to appear, our explanation is how it happens. A Christian who understands science therefore knows WHO causes the RAINBOW and also knows HOW the RAINBOW is formed, and further knows the spiritual WHY the RAINBOW is formed.

Every Solar and Lunar Eclipse is a reminder that we are not permanent residents on earth. It’s a reminder that we are going home. We know WHO causes the eclipses, and we know HOW scientifically speaking the eclipses are formed, and most importantly we know the spiritual WHY it keeps happening.

Many repeated signs are regular reminders that we have a promise from God. As the signs occur, and as the world in all its media focus on HOW this is happening scientifically, the believers should also add the WHO causes it and the Spiritual WHY it is happening.

This should be true not only for solar and lunar eclipses, but also for earthquakes, wars, false prophets, etc. As the world explains the scientific HOW these things are happening, we the believers do not dispute the HOW, but we also add the WHO causes it and WHY it has a spiritual meaning.

1 Corinthians 11:26 (NIV) – For WHENEVER you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

Holy Communion is a regular reminder of the death of Jesus. Signs of the end are a regular reminder that we are going home and soon the world will end. Whenever you see the eclipses you are reminded of God’s promises that we are going to a better world. Even so, come LORD Jesus! Amen
