Do You Believe I Can Do This?

Matthew 9:28 (NIV) – When he had gone indoors, the blind men came to him, and he asked them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” “Yes, Lord,” they replied.

Two blind men followed Jesus praying for help. They were pleading with Jesus to heal them from being blind. They followed Jesus all the way into a house that He entered. Jesus asked the two blind men, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?”

Why did the question precede the healing? Why did they need to answer this question before getting healed? “Do you believe that I am able to do this?”

Hebrews 11:6 (NIV) – And without faith it is impossible to please God, because ANYONE WHO COMES TO HIM MUST BELIEVE THAT HE EXISTS AND THAT HE REWARDS those who earnestly seek him.

You cannot transact with God unless you first believe that He exists and that He is able to reward. MUST BELIEVE are the words used. That is why Jesus asked this question, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?”

James 1:6-8 (NIV) – 6 But when you ask, you MUST BELIEVE AND NOT DOUBT, because THE ONE WHO DOUBTS is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 That person SHOULD NOT EXPECT TO RECEIVE ANYTHING FROM THE LORD. 8 Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.

God does not want us to doubt when we come to Him in prayer. We MUST BELIEVE if we are to receive anything from God. If we doubt, we cannot receive anything from God. The first thing required before prayer is answered is believing that God exists and He can do what you are asking from Him. That is why Jesus asked the two blind men this simple question before healing them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?”

Those who doubt and yet come to God in prayer, are people who don’t believe in God or His power. They just come to try their luck. It’s like they are gambling, so that if it works, fine. God rejects such an approach. He only deals with those who believe that He is able to do what they are requesting. “Do you believe that I am able to do this?”

Mark 9:22-24 (NIV) – 22 “It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But IF YOU CAN DO ANYTHING, take pity on us and help us.” 23 “‘IF YOU CAN’?” said Jesus. “EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE FOR ONE WHO BELIEVES.” 24 Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; HELP ME OVERCOME MY UNBELIEF!”

A father is seeking healing for the son who is demon possessed. The father’s request to Jesus has some doubt. The father tells Jesus that IF YOU CAN, please heal my son. Immediately Jesus highlights those words of doubt, and asks the father, did you say, IF I CAN? That doubt could cost the father the desired healing for the son. Then Jesus tells him that his prayer can only be answered if he believes. EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE FOR ONE WHO BELIEVES. The boy’s father discovered that unbelief, doubt, could cost him the healing of the son. Immediately he made this prayer, “I do believe; HELP ME OVERCOME MY UNBELIEF!”

The father acknowledges that he has some unbelief. He pleads with Jesus to first address that unbelief that he has. The father had unbelief because the disciples of Jesus were unable to heal the son, while Jesus was in the mountain of transfiguration. After failed attempts, doubt cropped up. He was struggling to eliminate the doubt. Doubt was standing in the way of answered prayer. “I do believe; HELP ME OVERCOME MY UNBELIEF!”

Mark 9:17-18 (NIV) – 17 A man in the crowd answered, “Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech. 18 Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I ASKED YOUR DISCIPLES TO DRIVE  OUT THE SPIRIT, BUT THEY COULD NOT.”

That unanswered prayer became the source of his doubt. The disciples COULD NOT. Now he comes to Jesus asking with some doubt, IF YOU CAN please heal my son. Jesus tells him, with that kind of doubt, God will not answer him. The man immediately asks for the doubt to be removed. “I do believe; HELP ME OVERCOME MY UNBELIEF!”

Anyone who has prayed for something for so long, has a risk of developing hidden doubts. Such a person prays for help from God but has already accepted the possibility that God may not answer his or her prayer. A doubt born out of experience may be hard to eliminate, and the best we can do is an urgent prayer to eliminate doubt. “Do you believe that I am able to do this?”“I do believe; HELP ME OVERCOME MY UNBELIEF!”

As we come to God seeking help, we must address any doubts that linger in our minds. Jesus wants to know if we believe that He can answer our prayers. “Do you believe that I am able to do this?”“I do believe; HELP ME OVERCOME MY UNBELIEF!”

May God help us to trust Him. May God help us to overcome doubt that may have been born from unanswered prayers or by entertaining wrong thoughts from friends, books, blogs movies, social media clips, etc. As we come to God in prayer He wants to know if we believe. Our answer is to first address our unbelief. “Do you believe that I am able to do this?”“I do believe; HELP ME OVERCOME MY UNBELIEF!”

Dear God we believe you can answer our prayers. Dear God help us to overcome unbelief. In Jesus name, Amen!
