2 Corinthians 7:1 – Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.
Chapter seven begins where chapter six has ended. Chapter six ends by telling us that the good and the bad do not associate. What belongs to God and what belongs to Satan cannot be in one person. We are actually admonished that – “do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers.”
Chapter six ends and chapter seven begins carrying on a continuation of that discussion. Chapter six ends by telling us when the good and the bad interact, there is contamination. Chapter seven continues that message by telling us to avoid contamination.
2 Corinthians 6:14 – Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?
2 Corinthians 6:15 – What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever?
2 Corinthians 6:16 – What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people.”
When someone who visits God’s temple for prayers, starts associating with someone who visits temples for idols, he or she will get contaminated. The message of chapter seven verse one is the conclusion of where chapter six ends. Avoid contamination!
Chapter six doesn’t end by telling to live ascetic life to avoid contamination. It doesn’t tells us to withdraw from society and live secluded lives. What chapter six ends by telling us is that, there is a level of association with others that can and will contaminate us. We should therefore avoid that level of interaction. Avoid contamination!
2 Corinthians 6:17-18 – Therefore, “Come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you.” And, “I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.”
Actually chapter six ends with a call to come out and be separate. Come out of relationships and associations that are bound to contaminate you. Avoid contamination!
