Luke 9:23 (NIV) – Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.
To sacrifice something is to give it up in order to get another one. You drop out of school in order to work in this company, that means you sacrifice your studies in order to get an income. Sacrifice in essence is losing this to gain that. There is a sacrifice you will make.
Our human nature is greedy. We want everything as much as possible. We want this without losing that. A man wants to have his wife without losing his girlfriend, impossible. There will be a sacrifice you will make. Where there is sacrifice, greed must give way, greed must come to an end. There is a sacrifice you will make.
You cannot be playful in school and get the grades of a hardworking student, no way. One will cause the other to suffer. This is why there is an English saying to the effect that you cannot have your cake and eat it. You cannot eat your cake and then still expect to have it and admire it, if it’s eaten it’s gone and you will have nothing to have to hold and to admire. Therefore choose to have your cake for admiration or choose to eat it. You can’t have it and eat it at the same time. You cannot have your cake and eat it. There is a sacrifice you will make.
You cannot be so careless with scathing words against a friend and expect to still have a friend. You will sacrifice your itch to hurl words or you will sacrifice your friendship. There is a sacrifice you will make. That is how life has been designed to be.
Luke 9:23-25 (NIV) – 23 Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it. 25 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self?
Jesus tells us that we have to sacrifice something if we choose to follow Him. We can sacrifice worldly interests and gain eternal life or sacrifice eternal life to gain worldly interests. You cannot have both. There is a sacrifice you will make.
Hypocrisy is an attempt to avoid sacrifice. You seem faithful to Christ and His way of life, while at the same time enjoying the contradictions of a worldly life. Hypocrisy fails because Christ rejects us if we are hypocritical. He demands that we make a sacrifice. There is a sacrifice you will make.
Matthew 6:24 (NIV) – “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
Hypocrisy is a mission impossible. You can’t serve two masters and succeed. There is one of the two whom you would have sacrificed in order to have the other. You will pretend to love God yet you have sacrificed Him for the money, so to speak. You can’t be serving both. There is a sacrifice you will make.
Revelation 3:15-16 (NIV) – 15 I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! 16 So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.
Jesus says to the Laodecian church that if you can’t make a sacrifice to remain either hot or cold, I will end my relationship with you by spitting you out. To be lukewarm is to refuse to sacrifice. To be lukewarm is to attempt to have both opposing sides without making a sacrifice. Jesus says if you can’t make a sacrifice and you remain lukewarm, He will sacrifice you and reject you. To remain in Jesus and heaven bound, there is a sacrifice you will make.
Luke 9:26 (NIV) – Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.
Sacrifice your image and identify with Jesus. Shame comes with image issues. To be ashamed means you do not want to publicly identify with Jesus. You are ashamed. When you are ashamed of Christ, you will protect your image by not identifying with Christ in public. True believers sacrifice their image and choose to identify with Jesus publicly. If you sacrifice and identify with Jesus, the entire Heaven will be proud of you. Therefore you must sacrifice for God to be proud of you. There is a sacrifice you will make!
Hebrews 11:24-27 (NIV) – 24 By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. 25 He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. 26 He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward. 27 By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the king’s anger; he persevered because he saw him who is invisible.
Moses sacrificed his life in a palace in order to have a relationship with God. Moses lost life in the palace by choice, in order that by choice he identifies with the God of Israel. Moses made a sacrifice and he became great. We can’t be great in this world, unless we make sacrifices. There is a sacrifice you will make.
Luke 9:23 (NIV) – Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross DAILY and follow me.
The sacrifices to greatness are DAILY made. The sacrifices of a believer are DAILY made. Sports people make sacrifices daily to train. Best students sacrifice daily to concentrate on their studies. Thriving relationships make daily sacrifices to prioritize peace and happiness. Anything and everything will only succeed if we make daily sacrifices. There is a sacrifice you will have to make daily.
To be an author you must sacrifice many things in order to write daily. What do you wish to achieve? What will you sacrifice daily? May God bless us and help us to make the required daily sacrifices, in Jesus name, Amen!
