Luke 9:18 (NIV) – Once when JESUS WAS PRAYING IN PRIVATE and his disciples were with him, he asked them, “Who do the crowds say I am?”
Private prayers are those unknown to anyone. Private prayers are different from public worship prayers. Private prayers are different from group prayers, different from family prayers and even different from couple of friends praying together.
Private prayers are designed to intentionally bar other people from listening or participating in those prayers. Private prayers are personal and confidential. They allow vulnerability in the presence of God.
At the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus was with all disciples, yet He had private prayers. He left two groups of His disciples and went slightly further away, so that He could pray. They were with Him but He moved away to pray privately. Do you pray privately?
The Bible records several instances where Jesus prayed privately. He would leave His disciples sleeping to go and pray privately. He would move away from His disciples to go and pray privately. Do you pray privately?
Do you need an audience for you to pray? Do you need to wake everyone up for you to pray? Do you need a public address system for you to pray? Do you need a group of dedicated people for you to pray? Jesus prayed alone often. Jesus did many private prayers. Do you pray privately?
Private prayers develops your walk alone with God, as Enoch walked in days of old. Noah alone with God. Abraham alone with God. Isaac alone with God. Jacob alone with God. Jesus the Son of God and also God, alone with God. Do you have time alone with God? Do you pray privately?
David the king prayed privately three times a day. Daniel a successful civil servant in Babylon, prayed privately three times a day. How many times do you pray privately?
Private prayers strengthen your faith. Private prayers strengthen your relationship with God. Private prayers are a personal link to the limitless power of God. Do you pray privately?
Private prayers do not replace public and group prayers. Private prayers do not nullify the importance of praying together. Private prayers have a unique role in our lives and we shouldn’t miss it. Do you pray privately?
May God help us to develop a routine for private prayers like Jesus did. With or without people around us, may we find time to pray privately. May we get closer to God and become more effective in what we do as we privately seek God. In Jesus name, Amen!
