Don’t Just Think, Think Carefully

This is what the LORD Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your ways.

We all think but we don’t think the same way. Our lives are a result of our thinking. We make decisions after thinking. We live according to what we think. Different types of lives are a result of different types of thinking.

Thinking is important because it leads to decision-making. The quality of your thinking process is directly related to the quality of your decisions. Your decisions are what you live out. Therefore to change your life, change your thoughts. If you change your thinking you change your decisions and entire life.

If thinking is this important, then we should not think casually. We should think carefully. This is the message God gives Israelites through prophet Haggai. God asks the people to stop casual thinking. People should not be lazy to think. Thinking is supposed to be done very carefully.

Israelites had returned from captivity. They were supposed to start building the Temple before building their houses. Unfortunately, they decided to prioritize their houses over God’s house. Because of their poor priorities, they missed God’s blessings. God denied them His blessings hoping that they will notice the negative change and prioritize the things of God.

When they stopped prioritizing God’s temple, life changed so drastically from good to bad and from bad to worse. God hoped that they will think about the changes and return to Him, but these people were either thinking casually or carelessly. Their poor thinking habits couldn’t let them notice that the negative effects were a result of God having withdrawn His blessings.

With such a situation at hand, God sends His prophet Haggai to call people’s attention to carefully thinking. This was a call to careful thinking. The spiritual lesson was missed because they were not thinking properly. A call to return to God was not making sense because they were not thinking as they should. They missed the solution to their greatest problems because they were not thinking as they should.

God tells them through the prophet, that don’t just think but think carefully. If you think carefully you will discover that the reason why you make money and lose it is because you have no spiritual priorities. If you think carefully you will discover that you buy clothes and they don’t warm you, you eat but are not satisfied and you drink but don’t quench your thirst because God has withdrawn His blessings from you, Haggai 1:6. If you think carefully, you will discover that without God’s blessings, even your best efforts yield nothing.

Many of us are like Israelites, we have never thought carefully. We think in a rush. We think lazily. We think casually. We think superficially. God calls us today not just to think, but to think carefully. If we think carefully we will return to God for our own good. We will return to God for the good of our businesses, jobs, health, families, studies, etc. Don’t just think, think carefully!

If you move from thinking to thinking carefully, you will acknowledge that a godless life is a hopeless life. You will discover that things were better under God than after you rose the ranks and forgot God. Difficulties were easier to handle when you were prayerful than when you stopped praying and relied on experience and consultants. If we were seriously thinking we would have noticed it. Don’t just think, think carefully!

If we continue thinking as usual without thinking carefully, we will continue suffering yet the solution is at hand. May God help us to think carefully and make the required changes, in Jesus’s name, Amen!
