Isn’t This The Last Day Motif?

John 6:39 – And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but RAISE THEM UP AT THE LAST DAY.

John 6:40 – For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will RAISE THEM UP AT THE LAST DAY.”

John 6:44 – “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will RAISE THEM UP AT THE LAST DAY.

John 6:54 – Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will RAISE THEM UP AT THE LAST DAY.

As the sermon at the Synagogue in Capernaum (John 6:59) came to an end, Jesus repeatedly spoke about the last day. A motif is a repeated pattern or thought that is hard to miss. From the Bible texts above cited from one sermon of Jesus, isn’t this the last day motif?

A motif is important in showing that Jesus didn’t talk about the last day by mistake. Repetition suggests that He was intentionally emphasizing the teachings on the last day. There is a last day.

There is a last day for everything. A last day for this sinful world full of suffering. A last day of trouble. A last day that will mark the end of what we know and usher in a new era.

Whatever we go through, be strengthened that there is a last day. Be comforted that there is a last day. If someone is a tyrant terrorizing your life, hold on, persevere, the tyrant has a last day. Even a dictator with immense power has a last day, after which he or she is no more. The last day is a good day.

There is a last day in prison. Last day of sickness. Last day of job hunting. Last day of loneliness. Last day of pain. Last day of a bad life.

The last day motif is good news that keeps our hopes alive. The last day motif is a warning if we are not doing the will of God. The last day motif should be kept in mind to keep us in check and ignite hope in us. There is a last day.

I may be a boss, but there is a last day when I will no longer be a boss. I may be rich and powerful, but there is a last day when others will dethrone me and be rich and powerful. There is a last day.

Don’t give up because of your troubles and challenges, there is a last day. Just persevere, there is a last day. The last day is coming.

While there are many last days affecting everything and everyone differently, Jesus was referring to the last day of this world. There is a time when this world and its current way of life and order will end. The last day of the world will be the beginning of eternal life.

When anyone dies, that is their last day. The world will also have its last day. Jesus will come back during the last day and end this world. Jesus will save the righteous out of this world on the last day. Jesus will punish sinners and burn this world on the last day. On the last day God will create a new heaven and new earth. These are all last day events.

Last day events may refer to events preceding the last day or events during the last days of the world after Jesus returns. What our passage also emphasizes today is that Jesus will raise people during the last day. This is a reference about resurrection. RAISE THEM UP AT THE LAST DAY.

When people die they don’t go to heaven. They wait in their graves and will be raised up from their graves at the last day. Resurrection will take place at the last day. Faithfuls who have died are not in heaven, they are in their graves waiting for Jesus to RAISE THEM UP AT THE LAST DAY.

Any teachings suggesting that the dead are in heaven, contradicts the obvious last day motif in scripture. Yet many people strangely believe what is not in the Bible. Do you believe that the dead are not in heaven, but as the Bible tells us today Jesus will RAISE THEM UP AT THE LAST DAY?

As burry our loved ones be comforted that they will be raised at the last day. As we miss our loved ones who died, be comforted that they will be raised at the last day. Let’s pray and wait for the last day. May thoughts of the last day give us hope and a smile.

Only the righteous will be raised on the last day. The sinners will be raised later to receive eternal punishment. Only the righteous who have died should be expected to rise to eternal life on the last day. It is safe to die as a righteous person, for Jesus will raise the righteous at the last day.

Any last day message is good news for the righteous and bad news for the wicked. There is a last day of everything we enjoy and everything we suffer, therefore let us live wisely and hopefully. The last day of the world will also come with resurrection of saints, it will be the best day ever. May that last day come soon. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
