Luke 6:47 – As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and PUTS THEM INTO PRACTICE, I will show you what they are like.
Luke 6:48 – They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.
Luke 6:49 – But the one who hears my words and DOES NOT PUT THEM INTO PRACTICE is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”
Matthew 7:24-27 tells us the same thing. The strong foundation a Christian can built is to practice what Jesus taught. Knowing is good and easy, but the challenge is to put them into practice.
If you know the whole Bible cover to cover. If you have mastered deep complicated Bible doctrines. Yet you do not practice them, according to Jesus, you are shallow.
The foundation of a Christian is in practice. Those who practice the little they know are more secure than those who know a lot. What sinks us deep and strong in faith is practicing what we know and not just knowing much more.
You know that Christians must love one another but you practice hatred in church or wherever, you are shallow. You know that Jesus taught that we must be merciful, yet people around you suffer at your constant wrath, you are shallow. Knowing everything without practice is being shallow.
You know that in Christ there is no discrimination but you don’t like people of other gender, tribe and race, you are shallow. Knowing without practicing leaves you dangerously shallow. You are not safe!
There is no safety in knowing without practice. Those who know and mesmerize others with their knowledge, are shallow until the day they choose to put them into practice. It is practice that puts depth in our faith.
The person contributing to every topic in church discussions and really knows everything Biblical could be the shallowest in faith. Knowing is extremely shallow. Practice gives depth to our faith.
The Pharisees, Sadducees, teachers of the law, pastors, leaders, lay preachers, outspoken church members, are people who know a lot about faith but could easily be shallow for lack of practice. When tests and temptations come the shallowness is exposed. Practicing what we know is better that knowing everything.
Matthew 28:20 – and TEACHING THEM TO OBEY EVERYTHING I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
The Great Commission is not just about knowledge but practice. We easily admit people to church who know and thinks it’s safe, but Jesus said, it’s only safe when they can obey, they can put it into practice. The aim is not to inform but to convince people to practice.
The world is a better place if we practice Christianity and not when we just know it. The aim is to practice. Practice or perish!
Only those who practice their faith now, will withstand temptation and trials that will come. Those who know everything without practicing will soon embarrass themselves and shock others when temptation and trials expose them and throw them out of church publicly and shamelessly. Practice or perish!
Practice what you read in scripture. Practice what you discuss during Bible study. Practice what is preached in sermons you preach and listen to. Practice what you read in books of faith. Don’t be satisfied with knowing. Knowing is very shallow. Knowing deeply and widely without practice is very shallow. Practice gives us depth. Practice or soon perish!
Practice your faith at home with parents, spouse and children. Practice your faith with relatives and friends. Practice your faith in school among friends. Practice your faith at work. Practice your faith in your neighborhood. Practice your faith among strangers. Practice will be a more effective way to spread your faith than showing that you know. Practice or perish soon!
Those who know a lot could be very shallow and unsafe if they don’t practice their faith. May God help us to practice what we know. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
