2 Samuel 2:4
Then the men of Judah came to Hebron, and there they anointed David king over the tribe of Judah…
1 Samuel 16:12-13
(12) So he sent for him and had him brought in. He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome features.
Then the LORD said, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one.”
(13) So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the LORD came powerfully upon David. Samuel then went to Ramah.
David was first anointed as King of Israel at God’s command at their home. Samuel anointed David to be a king of Israel to replace King Saul. God had rejected Saul and chosen David. However, the kingship of David was not instant, he had to wait for several years before it came to pass. But the point is God anointed him first at a time when his own father did not think he was fit to be king. God anointed him first.
After David’s anointing, many things happened. After David’s anointing, the Spirit of God came upon him. After David’s anointing, he killed Goliath. After David’s anointing, he received more praises thanking Saul. Because of that, Saul hated David and wanted to kill him. After David’s anointing, he had to run away from Saul for several years. The anointed running away from the rejected. At this point, we reckon that, when the anointed is running away from the rejected, he is not weak and the rejected should not celebrate anything.
After David’s anointing, he was lonely and on the run. Anointing doesn’t mean everything will always be smooth. Anointing doesn’t mean everything will happen instantly. When you are struggling and delayed, it doesn’t mean God has rejected you. The anointed was in excuse struggling, but he was still the anointed.
Some of the people suffering and below us, could be the anointed assigned to replace us. Some of the people celebrating and seemingly doing well and secure, could be the rejected waiting to be ejected by God in His time. As David struggled, he was still the anointed one of God.
As David suffered and ran for his life, the anointing didn’t seem to have been of any use. Those who knew he was anointed May have even doubted it. A man on the run doesn’t seem like king material. David on the run must have been written off by political pundits. But let us not forget that God had anointed him to be king!
When King Saul and his sons died at war, a gap in power occurred. Our text today tells us that the people of Judah then decided to anoint David as their king. The people of Judah now recognized that David was king material. What they did God had already done!
When they discovered that David was fit to be a king, God had already anointed David king. When they decided that it was now time for David to be king, they were getting late because God had already chosen David. What they did God had already done!
2 Samuel 5:3
When all the elders of Israel had come to King David at Hebron, the king made a covenant with them at Hebron before the LORD, and they anointed David king over Israel.
David was anointed for the third time as king over Israel by the rest of the tribes of Israel. God anointed David first. Judah anointed David as king secondly. Now all of Israel anoints David as their king. What they did God had already done!
God has done something for you and me already. God did it long ago. We may have doubted it through struggles and suffering, but God did anoint us with blessings and purpose. At some point, we looked like the laughing stock but God anointed us for greatness. By the time we discover or others discover that we are greater than we seem, we would be getting late. God has already done it before we or others believe it or do it. What they did God has already done!
As those anointing David thought they were doing him a favor, they were not, God had already done it. It may seem sometimes as if favors come from people and it may seem that you owe it to someone, I have news for you, you owe no one, God already did it for you. We are not indebted to anyone for what they discovered long after God did it. What they did God has already done!
May what God has already done come true eventually and soon for me, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
