Exodus 5:22-23
(22) Moses returned to the LORD and said, “Why, Lord, why have you brought trouble on this people? Is this why you sent me? (23) Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has brought trouble on this people, and you have not rescued your people at all.”
We need a solution when there is a problem. The solution is expected to make things better. Problems make things terrible and we dislike it. Solutions restore normalcy and things that had gone wrong get better. But what do you do when the solution you apply makes things worse instead of better?
Israelites had been turned into slaves in Egypt. That was a problem and a bad situation to find themselves in. They were on forced labor without pay. They were overworked. They lost the freedom to pursue their own lives as they wished. The Israelites cried to God to save them from Egyptian slavery.
God heard their cry and sent Moses to go and deliver the Israelites from Egypt. God asked Moses and Aaron to go to Pharaoh king of Egypt and ask him to release the Israelites. God was offering a solution to the slavery that Israelites cried about. Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and informed him that God wanted Israelites out of Egypt, Exodus 5:1. This was a solution to the slavery problem.
Pharaoh’s reaction was first to ask who God is. Secondly, Pharaoh made it clear that he will not let the Israelites leave Egypt, Exodus 5:2. Moses and Aaron insisted that God must be obeyed or else He will bring disaster to those who disobey Him, Exodus 5:3. At this point Pharaoh got angry and gave orders that Israelites should be punished harder. Their work as slaves should be made difficult. From that point, life became very difficult for Israelites. They were beaten and forced to work much harder. Israelites blamed Moses and Aaron for making things worse for them, Exodus 5:20-21. The solution to slavery that God gave Moses and Aaron had made things worse. What do you do when the solution makes things worse?
A solution from God cannot be a wrong solution. If it is a human solution that makes things worse, we quickly abandon it because human is to error. What do you do when a solution from God makes things worse than they were? God cannot be wrong. His solution cannot be wrong. What do you do when such a God-given solution makes things worse?
God’s solution to humanity is being a believer, but when you become a believer your family abandons you. The solution has made it worse. You become a believer you lose friends. The solution has made things worse. You become a believer you stop selling alcohol and other drugs that gave you income, and now you are broke and without a source of income. The solution has made things worse. You have decided that a life partner will be a person of faith, but now you have no one to date in that category. The solution has made things worse. You were violent and it made people respect you, now you are a believer and no more violent, and now you are disrespected by those who should respect you. The solution has made things worse. What do you do when a God-given solution makes things worse?
Our Bible text today tells us that Moses and Aaron went back to God and told Him that His solution had made things worse, Exodus 5:22-23. If a solution from God makes things worse, go back to God and tell Him His solution has made things worse. Do not abandon God’s solution until you consult Him. Do not take it upon yourself to say God has failed and that you should try something else. Consult God and He will fix the problem.
Exodus 6:1-2
(1) Then the LORD said to Moses, “Now you will see what I will do to Pharaoh: Because of my mighty hand he will let them go; because of my mighty hand he will drive them out of his country.”
(2) God also said to Moses, “I am the LORD.
God assured Moses and Aaron that His solution will work because He is God. He has power. He has authority. He can’t be stopped. He can’t fail. His plan must work. That means when God’s solution makes things worse, it’s for a short time and it only makes God use other means to face His way. Stick to God’s solution even if it makes things worse, He will never fail at the end of it all.
Mark 5:35-36
(35) While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” they said. “Why bother the teacher anymore?”
(36) Overhearing what they said, Jesus told him, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”
The synagogue ruler came to Jesus for a solution to a very sick daughter. Jesus delayed while healing a woman. Eventually, a message came that the daughter of the ruler had died. Things had gotten from bad to worse. Yet he was with Jesus and things turned to be worse. Jesus told the ruler not to be afraid, he should just believe. Have things gotten worse for you after you believed in God’s solution? Do not be afraid, just believe! That daughter was raised from the dead and your problem that has gotten worse will be solved. Do not be afraid, just believe!
Psalms 30:5
For his anger lasts only a moment,
but his favor lasts a lifetime;
weeping may stay for the night,
but rejoicing comes in the morning.
Please persevere, the turn for worse is temporary. After things turn from bad to worse, they will soon go back to better. It’s darkest before dawn. When a solution from God makes things worse, persevere, it shall be well, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
