Isaiah 8:19-20 (NIV) – 19 When someone tells you to consult mediums and spiritists, who whisper and mutter, should not a people inquire of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living? 20 Consult God’s instruction and the testimony of warning. If anyone does not speak according to this word, they have no light of dawn.
Isaiah 8:19-20 (Message Bible) – 19 When people tell you, “Try out the fortunetellers. Consult the spiritualists. Why not tap into the spirit-world, get in touch with the dead?” 20 Tell them, “No, we’re going to study the Scriptures.” People who try the other ways get nowhere—a dead end!
Isaiah 8:19-20 (New Living Translation) – 19 Someone may say to you, “Let’s ask the mediums and those who consult the spirits of the dead. With their whisperings and mutterings, they will tell us what to do.” But shouldn’t people ask God for guidance? Should the living seek guidance from the dead? 20 Look to God’s instructions and teachings! People who contradict his word are completely in the dark.

Should they seek the dead on behalf of the living? 20 To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.
Isaiah 8:19-20 (Amplified Bible) – 19 When the people [instead of trusting God] say to you, “Consult the mediums [who try to talk to the dead] and the soothsayers who chirp and whisper and mutter,” should not a people consult their God? Should they consult the dead on behalf of the living? 20 [Direct those people] to the law and to the testimony! If their teachings are not in accord with this word, it is because they have no dawn.
A consultant is an expert who has experience and knowledge to guide you in a particular matter. A consultant saves you from common mistakes. A consultant saves you from losses.
A building consultant. A medical consultant. A security consultant. An investment consultant. A personal finance consultant. A spiritual consultant.
A wrong consultant will mislead you. A fake consultant is as good as no consultant. Once you get the right consultant, you should ignore and avoid other unknown untried consultants.
Listening to different consultants can leave you undecided. Listening to conflicting consultants is not useful. Listening to more than one consultant, means you will choose one, and you therefore run the risk of ignoring the best consultant.
Isaiah tells the people of Israel to only consult God. Isaiah tells them that people will tempt you to consult witches, fortune tellers, mediums, etc. Isaiah tells them to consult God. These witches etc will consult the dead to give you guidance. Why consult the dead when there is a living God?
The message is simple. You have the best consultant, therefore consult no other. Can’t God give you better guidance than your unreliable fake consultants? God doesn’t charge you. Consult God!
When you get prolonged sickness that hospitals haven’t been able to handle- who will you consult? People will tell you to consult prayer experts, a masked name for modern day witches. Isaiah asks you, why consult the dead, why consult human beings, yet you can consult God?
When you face misfortune after misfortune in a way that can’t be explained- who do you consult? When you are worried about uncertainty of the future who do you consult? When you want to control a loved one or a boss who is out of control, who do you consult? When things are not just working out and you need a breakthrough, who do you consult?
Isaiah tells the people that, you will be tempted to go to witchcraft experts, but please don’t consult them. You have God as your best expert, consult Him and no other and you will be safe. You have the best consultant consult no other!
Isaiah doesn’t prohibit us from consulting experts like medical experts and builders, lawyers, bankers, etc. Isaiah is against consulting witches and their like, because their source of power is opposed to that of our God. Don’t consult people using spiritual powers from other denominations, faiths and religions. They are opposed to what you believe and stand for.
Isaiah gives the best advice in verse twenty. He says, every advice must not conflict with scriptures. Scriptures are the revealed will of God. Anything or anyone that contradicts the scripture is hopeless and their advice and themselves will not see the light of day. Reject that advice pronto.

Any advice from any quarters should never contradict what the Bible says. Any contradictions however small is a red flag to quickly abandon the advice and move on elsewhere. God is our best consultant, consult no other!
Ecclesiastes 9:5-6 (NIV) – 5 For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing; they have no further reward, and even their name is forgotten. 6 Their love, their hate and their jealousy have long since vanished; never again will they have a part in anything that happens under the sun.
The Bible teaches that the dead know nothing and they don’t participate in life with the living. Any consultant who suggests that a solution to any problem is to appease the dead, is contradicting the Bible. Such a consultant must be rejected immediately and their advice ignored. Any advice contradicting anything in the Bible is trash and should be treated as such!
2 Kings 1:3-4 (NIV) – 3 But the angel of the LORD said to Elijah the Tishbite, “Go up and meet the messengers of the king of Samaria and ask them, ‘Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going off to consult Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron?’ 4 Therefore this is what the LORD says: ‘You will not leave the bed you are lying on. You will certainly die!’” So Elijah went.
The king of Samaria died because he didn’t consult God. We fail because we don’t consult God. We could be where we are because we didn’t even pray for God’s blessings. Ignoring God in our matters can lead to death and failure or even both. We should consult God!
We quickly make phone calls to consult other people- why can’t we consult God through prayer before those people? We rush to make appointments on matters we haven’t prayed about. King of Samaria rushed to consult the god of Ekron. He didn’t consult God of heaven. For that reason, he died, yet he would have recovered and lived.
Dear God forgive me for rushing to consult others before even praying to you. Teach me to know and believe that you are the best consultant. Save me from visiting or believing witches and the like. May I never give a chance to any advice or anyone who contradicts anything in scripture. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
