John 5:14
Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.”
Once saved always saved is not a Bible-based belief even though it sounds biblical. It is as foreign to the Bible as the belief that God helps those who help themselves. The only time salvation will be irreversible is when one dies in Christ or when we are taken to heaven during the second coming of Jesus.
For now, when we accept salvation, we still can turn back and walk away from the light. We can accept Jesus and reject Him. You are saved today but it is not a guarantee that you will remain saved. By being saved we mean accepting to belong to the body of Christ. Hebrews 6:4-6 warns against backsliding. Backsliding is accepting salvation and then going back to sin.
1 Corinthians 10:12
So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!
Apostle Paul warns the Corinthian church that there is a possibility of falling away even for those who are standing. Those who are standing are those who have a remarkable spiritual life and are exemplary and could even be leaders. Apostle Paul tells them that the situation can change if they are not careful. It is possible to be saved and still go back to sin. Once saved is not always saved, we must remain vigilant so that we don’t lose faith!
In our passage today, John 5, Jesus healed a man who had been sick for thirty-eight years. Jesus saved the man from sickness. Then Jesus meets the man later on and warns him that something worse could happen if he keeps on sinning. Jesus told him that while it’s true he has been saved from sickness, he is not safe, if he keeps on sinning something worse will happen. He had been saved but he was not safe!
We should not forget God after He saves us. Saved doesn’t mean safe, something worse can still happen to us. We still need God’s protection and favor. We are saved but we are not safe!
God has saved you this year from near-death experiences? Something worse could still happen if we do not stop sinning. God has saved you from the embarrassment and the consequences of your sins. Something worse could still happen if we do not stop sinning. God has saved you from losses? Something worse could still happen if we do not stop sinning!
God has saved you from breaking up this year? Something worse could still happen if we do not stop sinning. God has saved you from failure again? Something worse could still happen if we do not stop sinning. Whatever it is that God has saved you from, remember the words of Jesus, something worse could still happen!
Do you think you have already seen the worst in your life? Do you think this year is so bad and it can’t get worse? Jesus warns that unless we stop sinning, the worst will happen, worse than the pain we are still shocked about. Save us from the worst dear God, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
