Jeremiah 8:6 (NIV) – I have listened attentively, but they do not say what is right. None of them repent of their wickedness, saying, “What have I done?” Each pursues their own course like a horse charging into battle.
Jeremiah 8:6 (Message Bible) – I listened carefully but heard not so much as a whisper. No one expressed one word of regret. Not a single “I’m sorry” did I hear. They just kept at it, blindly and stupidly banging their heads against a brick wall.
Jeremiah 8:6 (New Living Translation) – I listen to their conversations and don’t hear a word of truth. Is anyone sorry for doing wrong? Does anyone say, “What a terrible thing I have done”? No! All are running down the path of sin as swiftly as a horse galloping into battle!
Someone is eavesdropping on all your conversations. Someone has been listening to all your conversations, all your phone calls. Someone has been reading all your emails and chats. Someone has been present in all your formal and informal meetings. That someone is God!
God has been listening attentively to us as we speak to each other. God has been very keen on what we sing and pray about. Whenever we start any conversation or pray, God listens attentively.
Why is God listening attentively? To catch us in wrong doing? Is He looking for one mistake to accuse us of? Is there a story He is following to get the details?
The Bible in our passage today tells us that God is first listening attentively because He desires to hear us speaking the truth. God wants to get excited when we speak the truth. God wants to hear you prefer the truth and speak the truth under all circumstances.
As God listens to all your chats, calls and conversations, will He find you speaking the truth truthfully? Will you be honest with your feelings, expressions and facts? God is listening because He desires truth to come out of our mouths.
Secondly, God is listening because the truth He wants to hear from us is the truth of repentance. God wants to hear us acknowledge that we are wrong and heading in the wrong direction.
God wants to find out if we are sorry about the fact that we have offended Him. God wants to hear that we wish to fix our relationship with Him. Therefore He listens attentively.
He listens attentively so that He doesn’t miss it incase you say it indirectly. He listens attentively so that He doesn’t miss it when you insinuate. He listens attentively so that if you speak it out quickly in a very low tone He doesn’t miss it. He listens attentively incase you almost say it in a manner that may probably count as you having said it.
Luke 15:20-23 (NIV – 20 So he got up and went to his father. “But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. 21 “The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ 22 “But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. 23 Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate.
When the prodigal son came home the father was so attentive that he didn’t have to hear everything. Immediately the guy spoke, the father restored him to the family. The father only needed a tiny hint that he was glad to be home and the rest was his to fix. His walking back home in a surrendered way was all the hint he needed. God is listening for a tiny hint from you!
God is listening attentively to all your conversations, chats, calls, consultations, etc. Will God hear the truth from your end? Will you prefer truth? God is listening attentively, will you repent and be genuinely sorry for living a contrary life?
Isaiah tells us that God listened and heard nothing. God listened attentively but Israelites kept rushing in the extreme wrong direction. They couldn’t be saved!
May God find us worthy by His grace. May God find us truthful. May God find us repentant. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
