You Control Nothing! Just Follow Instructions 

Ecclesiastes 9:2 (NIV) – All share a common destiny—the righteous and the wicked, the good and the bad, the clean and the unclean, those who offer sacrifices and those who do not. As it is with the good, so with the sinful; as it is with those who take oaths, so with those who are afraid to take them.

King Solomon, the second king of Israel, was the wisest man to ever live according to God’s promise. That wisdom gave him a better perspective of life more than all of us both the living and the dead. The Holy Spirit inspired Solomon to write some books in the Bible. Therefore the books are not only full of unmatched wisdom, they are also divinely inspired.

In the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon tells us that life is vanity or meaningless. Whatever we do  ends up to be vanity. What we do to be happy ends up to be vanity. What we do in all seriousness, ends up to be vanity. Nothing in our end can fully take control of life and produce meaning. We can’t control life!

Our text above indicates that at the end of it all, the same fate will overtake all of us. The wise just like the fools will die. The righteous just like the wicked will die. You will not control your final fate by your wisdom or lack of it, you control nothing. You both will die after living completely different lives. You control nothing.

Isaiah 64:6 (NIV) – All of us have become like one who is unclean, and ALL OUR RIGHTEOUS ACTS ARE LIKE FILTHY RAGS; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away.

The Bible teaches that if human beings choose to be good, to be righteous, God perceives it as filthy rags. You can’t be so good on your own, to the extent that you can influence God or your destiny. Your goodness, niceness, righteousness, is unacceptable. Therefore with it you control nothing. Our salvation is accepting the righteousness of Christ by faith. Nothing of our own. We control nothing. Even our best behavior after salvation is produced by the Holy Spirit inspired us and not by ourselves. We control nothing!

King Solomon tells us that we control nothing. We can pursue happiness and never find it. We may amass material things and those without end up happier than us. We may work hard to live longer, and those who carelessly live, end up living longer. We control nothing!

After reading all books by wise people and deeply reflecting on life, life remains a mystery. You control nothing. Therefore what do we do?

Ecclesiastes 9:7-10 (NIV) – 7 Go, eat your food with gladness, and drink your wine with a joyful heart, for God has already approved what you do. 8 Always be clothed in white, and always anoint your head with oil. 9 Enjoy life with your wife, whom you love, all the days of this meaningless life that God has given you under the sun—all your meaningless days. For this is your lot in life and in your toilsome labor under the sun. 10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the realm of the dead, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.

Since we control nothing, the wisest and inspired man tells us to find joy in whatever we have to do now. Since you control nothing, just enjoy your food and drinks. Dress well and enjoy your relationships. This is what you got to do. You control nothing, just enjoy these simple things. Whatever is your assignment in life, give it your best because that is all you got to do.

In simple words just enjoy your daily life as it is. To attempt and think you can control outcomes will take you on a long winding path that ends up exactly where you were avoiding. Be happy today and do your best. This is because you control nothing.

Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 (NIV) – 13 Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind. 14 For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil.

Now that we control nothing, Solomon advises in his conclusion that we should just follow divine instructions. You control nothing therefore do what God says. Since God is the final and ultimate judge, just follow His instructions. Read the Bible and live according to the will of God. Let God control your daily life and ultimate destiny, because you control nothing!

Dear God save me from the vanity of thinking that I am in control of things and people around me. Help me to enjoy my food, drinks, clothes and relationships. Help me to do my best in whatever I am supposed to do today. Help me to live according to your will your instructions. Dear God control my daily life and my ultimate destiny because I control nothing. In Jesus name, Amen!
