Hebrews 7:11 – If perfection could have been attained through the Levitical priesthood—and indeed the law given to the people established that priesthood—why was there still need for another priest to come, one in the order of Melchizedek, not in the order of Aaron?
Hebrews 7:18 – The former regulation is set aside because it was weak and useless
For one to be a priest in Israel they had to be descendants of Levi. Nobody else could become a priest. These priests served and retired and later on died. These priests were as weak as the people they led in worship. That was the old order.
Hebrews 7:14 – For it is clear that our Lord descended from Judah, and in regard to that tribe Moses said nothing about priests.
Then comes Jesus who is our High Priest. Jesus is neither a descendant of Aaron or Levi. Jesus came from the tribe of Judah that produced kings. Yes, Jesus is the King of Kings, but He is also a priest. How does Jesus become a priest yet He is not a descendant of the priestly family?
1 Samuel 13:9 – So he said, “Bring me the burnt offering and the fellowship offerings.” And Saul offered up the burnt offering.
1 Samuel 13:13 – “You have done a foolish thing, ” Samuel said. “You have not kept the command the LORD your God gave you; if you had, he would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time.
It is dangerous to do priestly duties if you are not from the designated tribe. King Saul of the tribe of Benjamin was rejected by God as a king, because he did priestly duties that belong to the tribe of Levi, yet his tribe is Benjamin. For that mistake, God rejected him as a king. It’s dangerous to play priest when you are not.
Hebrews 7:14 – For it is clear that our Lord descended from Judah, and in regard to that tribe Moses said nothing about priests.
Jesus is a priest yet He is not a Levite but of the tribe of Judah. Isn’t that dangerous? How can He be a priest when He is from the wrong tribe?
The Bible introduces a mystery man by the name Melchizedek. We have written a lot about who He is elsewhere. This mysterious man has no father or mother. Melchizedek has no beginning and no end. Melchizedek is a King too like Jesus. He is the King of Righteousness. Melchizedek is also a King of peace. Above all that Melchizedek is a priest. Yet He too is not from the family of Aaron and Levi. He is not just a priest, the Bible tells us that He is a priest forever.
Hebrews 7:18 – The former regulation is set aside because it was weak and useless
The Bible tells us that the old priesthood of Aaron and Levi’s family was weak and not very useful. God has replaced that priesthood with the priesthood of Jesus, in the order of Melchizedek. A new priesthood that is completely different from the old one.
The old priesthood had priests who lived for sometime, retired and then died. The new priesthood of Jesus in the order of Melchizedek, has a Priest who will never be replaced. Jesus will serve as our priest forever!
The family of Levi was limited in many ways because they were human beings like us. Jesus is perfect and sinless and therefore the best priest. The old has been replaced with something better.
The old priesthood used the blood of animals. Jesus the new Priest in the order of Melchizedek uses His own perfect blood. The old and weak has been replaced with something new and better!
1 Corinthians 15:53 – For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality.
In future when Jesus returns on earth He will replace and change our bodies. These old and weak bodies will be replaced with new better bodies. These bodies that get sick and old will be replaced with bodies that don’t age. These bodies that die or are mortal will be replaced with bodies that don’t die or are immortal.
God who replaced the old weak priesthood with a new better one can still make the desired changes in our lives. God who will replace our bodies with better ones in future, can still make replacements today.
Our old and bad habits can be replaced with a better character of Christ in us. Our behavior that is old and a liability can be replaced with better behavior. God can grant us the desired change.
If God could replace an old and almost impossible to change priesthood with a completely different one, He can make any changes for us. He can change our impossible situations and circumstances. He can change us. He can change people around us. From old and bad to new and better.
Dear God change some people around me. Dear God change me. Dear God change my situation and circumstances. Dear God change me for eternity. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
