What Do You Say To Yourself?

Matthew 9:20-21 (NIV) – 20 Just then a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak. 21 She said to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.”

The woman in the story had suffered for twelve years. No solution had come for twelve years. Each of the twelve years was discouragement after discouragement. She had tried everything. When she heard about Jesus, She convinced herself that it’s worth trying.

This woman was not convinced by what others said about Jesus. She convinced herself. Others had given her many suggestions that had consistently failed for twelve years. Some were on trial and error. Some were linking her to their relatives and friends. Some genuinely wanted to help her. Whatever the intention, others led her to failure after failure. This time, she convinced herself. If it failed this time, she had herself to blame. 

The last push that brought her healing came from her personal conviction. She spoke to herself. She talked to herself. She persuaded herself. She said to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.”

She was at the darkest moment in her life, and what changed her situation was the willingness to try again. She tried again because that is what she persuaded herself to do. What do you say to yourself when you are in a dark place in life? Do you give it one more try? To you encourage yourself? She said to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.”

Do you encourage or discourage yourself when you speak to yourself? Do you say to yourself that everyone hates you? Do you say to yourself that other people are planning to harm you and bring you failure and embarrassment? What do you say to yourself? Do you keep reminding yourself the hurtful moments or do you focus on the way forward? What do you say to yourself? She said to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.”

Do you tell yourself how impossible the assignment is? Do you tell yourself possibilities or impossibilities? Do you encourage yourself or your thoughts leave you discouraged? What do you say to yourself? She said to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.”

Luke 15:17-20 (NIV) – 17 “When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! 18 I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’ 20 So he got up and went to his father. “But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.

The prodigal son spoke to himself. The prodigal son told himself that he will go to the father and make a confession and also repent. He spoke to himself about a positive step that he will take. When the prodigal son finished speaking to himself, he took action and left for home. If you speak to yourself positively, positive action will immediately follow. If you speak to yourself negatively, negative action will follow immediately. What do you say to yourself?

When you have sickness that is worrying, what do you say to yourself? When you are stranded financially, what do you say to yourself? When you do your best and you fail an exam for the first time or a repeated time, what do you say to yourself? When your relationships are draining energy from you and they are causing you heartache and you seem to be living in regret, what do you say to yourself? When you are guilty of sin and you consequently lack peace, what do you say to yourself?

Your way out of trouble depends on what you say to yourself. Your finding reprieve even while still in trouble, depends on what you say to yourself. Choose what you say to yourself and the situation will be as you have spoken to yourself. What do you say to yourself?

May God help us to speak positively to ourselves. May God help us to be the greatest source of encouragement for ourselves. Not out of self dependence but out of a God given resilience to courageously face situations by encouraging ourselves. May we say the right things to ourselves, in Jesus name, Amen!
