Before We Proceed Take Off Your Shoes!

Acts 7:32 – ‘I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.’ Moses trembled with fear and did not dare to look.

Acts 7:33 – “Then the Lord said to him, ‘Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.

Acts 7:34 – I have indeed seen the oppression of my people in Egypt. I have heard their groaning and have come down to set them free. Now come, I will send you back to Egypt.’

God appears to Moses in a burning bush. Moses rushes to see why the bush is burning and is not getting consumed. As he gets closer, God asks him to remove his shoes and then God introduces Himself as the God of his fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. 

That is as if to say, before we proceed… God asks Moses to remove his shoes first. God doesn’t just order him to remove his shoes for the sake of it. God gives the reasons why Moses must remove his shoes. God says to him that the place is now a holy place. Before we proceed, take off your shoes!

God is telling Moses, that before we engage, let’s establish a clear relationship. I am God and you are my creature. Show respect and reverence. Don’t behave as if we are equals. Before we proceed, take off your shoes!

Before we proceed you must learn to differentiate between the holy and the common. Before we proceed you must know that holy things are handled carefully and with reverence. Therefore remove your shoes to acknowledge that you know what is holy and what isn’t holy. Before we proceed, take off your shoes!

Before we proceed, how is your attitude? We can’t proceed with pride. We can only proceed if you are humble. Take off your shoes to demonstrate humility. Before we proceed, take off your shoes!

Moses was about to begin a journey with God. A journey that will mark an illustrious career. A journey that will be challenging. A journey that will forever change his life for the better. Yet God has a condition for him to meet. Before we proceed, take off your shoes!

This is exactly where God begins with each and everyone of us. God demands that we recognize Him as the only God. No witches and witch doctors and godfathers.  No worshipping idols such as money, education, bosses, lovers, etc.,. God demands that we handle the holy as holy and the common as common. Holy tithes and offerings. Holy Sabbath. Holy marriage. Holy church and its leaders, etc.,. God demands that we demonstrate humility. No bossy attitude at work, at home, at church or anywhere. Humble enough to rectify our relationship with God by joining the church, getting baptized or rebaptized immediately. These demands are what entails removing shoes. God still makes the same demands even today. Before we proceed, remove your shoes!

Do you want to proceed into a relationship that may lead to marriage? Do you want God to be part of it? Do you want to proceed in your studies and get good grades and higher qualifications? Do you want God to be part of it? God has a message for you. Before we proceed, remove your shoes!
