Acts 7:39 – “But our ancestors refused to obey him. Instead, they rejected him and in their hearts turned back to Egypt.
Stephen narrates that Moses was rejected by Israelites and he ran to Midian. This same Moses who was rejected by Israelites, is the one who God chose to lead Israelites out of Egypt. They rejected Moses but God approved him.
Romans 8:31 – What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
What matters in life is whether God approves you. If God is for you, it doesn’t matter who tries to be against you. Those against you may give you a hard time, and you may suffer here and there, but at the end you are a winner, because God never fails.
Stephen says that Israelite leaders rejected Moses. They refused to obey Moses. They rebelled against Moses. But that did not give them the place of Moses. Their hatred didn’t give them the favor Moses had with God. No matter how much you hate a person, you will never have what they have. In fact hatred makes it completely impossible for you to get close to who they are and what they have.
They hated Moses. They rejected Moses. They rebelled against Moses. The leadership of Moses was a headache because of them. Yet we know Moses and his great achievements, but we do not even know who they are. They became irrelevant to history.
Jealous. Hatred. Rebellion based on envy will spent your energy but you will always amount to nothing. God protects those we hate without a just cause. God fights against us and in favor of those we hate. No wonder, for our own good we are advised against hatred.
Matthew 5:43 – “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’
Matthew 5:44 – But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
The leaders of Israel didn’t know that by fighting Moses they were fighting God. They didn’t know the energy, resources and time spent scheming against Moses was workin in favor of Moses and against them.
Then the Bible observes a very sad fact that while they were on their way to Canaan, led by Moses, their hearts had turned back towards Egypt. They were physically traveling to Canaan, but in their hearts they were traveling back to Egypt. Same person same time going opposite directions!
The same person in church physically seeming to be heaven bound can be passionate about worldly things in their heart. The physical body seems to be present in church, the heart hates spiritual things and loves the world. Same person same time going opposite directions!
Same person seems tolerant of everyone and generally loving, but the heart hates and discriminates against others. Nice civil smiles on the outward but deep within the heart feeling like others are inferior and an irritation. Same person same time going opposite directions!
They hated Moses that is why they were with him physically but their hearts were on the opposite direction. If you hate your partner, you can live together but the hearts are divorced. Same person same time going opposite directions!
An employee can hate the employer and the entire company but still stay around working. They are present physically and loyal but their hearts hate everyone and everything about the job. Same person same time going opposite directions!
Matthew 22:37 – Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’
Love God with everything. Love God and only go one direction both physically and in heart. Nothing goes the opposite direction. Love God with everything.
Matthew 12:25 – Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand.
If you are divided against your self, you will fail. Hypocrites dont enjoy life. If you are doing what you don’t like, forget about being successful.
May God save us from this syndrome of the same person going opposite directions at the same time. May our bodies and hearts and everything about us, go one way, the LORD’s way. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
