Though They Were Tall and Strong

Amos 2:9
“Yet I destroyed the Amorites before them,
though they were tall as the cedars
and strong as the oaks.
I destroyed their fruit above
and their roots below.

Tall and strong means they can withstand any attempts to destroy them. Talk and strong at a time when security was in physical strength meant that safety was certain. Tall and strong implied that they will be around for a very long time.

Numbers 13:31
But the men who had gone up with him said, “We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are.”

Numbers 13:33
We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.”

Amorites were tall and strong. Not just tall and strong but also scary. When Twelve spies of Israel saw them, ten lost faith of ever defeating such a tall and strong people. Just a look at them and you surrender before the fight. They were tall and strong and anyone who saw them lost appetite for a fight.

The prophet Amos speaks to Israelites in our passage of consideration today. Amos reminds them that God rescued them from terrible circumstances. In the words of God Himself, Israelites we’re protected by God so that even the tall and strong enemies were destroyed. Though they were tall and strong!

Tall and strong was a barrier to human beings. Tall and strong scared human beings. Tall and strong was a human advantage and problem. God tells us through Amos that being tall and strong is not His problem. No one can challenge God just because they are tall and strong. God destroyed them though they were tall and strong!

Tall and strong today could be money. Tall and strong today could be the experience that gives us an advantage. Tall and strong today could be academic achievements. Tall and strong today could be strategies we have laid down. Tall and strong today could be a political following. Tall and strong could be the voter base. Tall and strong could be godfathers above in an organization. Tall and strong could be our beautiful and handsome features. God destroyed them though they were tall and strong!

Our security today cannot prevent God from achieving His purposes. God will have His way even if we resist it because we are tall and strong. Nothing stops God from achieving what He wants. For the sake of Israelites, God destroyed them though they were tall and strong!

If you are tall and strong, do not feel too safe against weak people who have God on their side. With God tall and strong is rubbish. With God tall and strong is nothing scary or worth worrying about. Tall and strong is nothing before God. Do not brag or pride or settle comfortably against God’s people because of tall and strong. Don’t forget that He destroyed them though they were tall and strong!

Goliath was tall and strong but David by God’s power killed him. Tall and strong may be scary until God steps in. If we face the tall and strong, call on God. If threatened by the tall and strong turn to God. God destroyed them though they were tall and strong!

In one way or the other, I am tall and strong, save me from pride, arrogance, and intimidation of others. May I be reminded that God has many times destroyed the tall and strong. May I treat others well though I am tall and strong. May God save me from the sins of the tall and strong, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
