Obadiah 1:21
Deliverers will go up on Mount Zion
to govern the mountains of Esau.
And the kingdom will be the LORD’s.
God owns everything by virtue of creation. God gave us the power of choice. Using the power of choice we fell into sin and prefer a world in which God doesn’t own everything.
God could use force and ensure the power of choice that disenfranchised Him is no longer applicable. But God chose to plead with us through preaching and other ways so that we can let Him be God and owner of everything. God has indeed been gracious in letting us behave as if we own the world and our own lives when indeed we don’t. God wants us to willingly surrender our lives back to His ownership.
In the book of Obadiah that we are considering today, God promises to destroy Edomites who are descendants of Esau. Then God promises to restore Israel and give them the territory that belonged to the Edomites. It seems like God wants to expand the kingdom that belongs to Israel by giving them Edomites land, but that is not the case. The last verse of this book tells us the aim of all these. The aim is so that the kingdom will belong to God.
Why is God destroying Edomites? To enrich Israel? No! God destroys Edomites so that the kingdom belongs to God. Why is God blessing Israel? So that they can be rich? No! God blessed and enriches Israel so that the kingdom belongs to God. The good and the bad are happening for one purpose – so that the kingdom belongs to God. Until when God owns the kingdom, we are not yet there where He wants us to be!
Why does God allow bad things to happen? Why does God allow good things to happen? So that the kingdom belongs to God. Until when God owns the kingdom, we are not yet there where He wants us to be!
We all have a kingdom or even several kingdoms in our lives. Our own life is a kingdom. Kingdom of our finances. Kingdom of our health. Kingdom of our relationships. Kingdom of our education. And the overall kingdom of our life. Until when God owns the kingdom, we are not yet there where He wants us to be!
In our kingdom, good things and bad things happen. Some we regret. Some hurt us. Some are good and some are bad. All things happen so that the kingdom belongs to God. Until when God owns the kingdom, we are not yet there where He wants us to be!
Matthew 6:9-10
(9) “This, then, is how you should pray:
“‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
(10) your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Jesus taught us to pray for God’s kingdom to come. May God’s kingdom come in my various kingdoms and my overall kingdom. Until when God owns the kingdom, we are not yet there where He wants us to be!
May my kingdom belong to God from today henceforth, in Jesus’s name, Amen!
