This is The Critical Step to Excellence

2 Chronicles 3:2-4
(2) He began building on the second day of the second month in the fourth year of his reign.
(3) The foundation Solomon laid for building the temple of God was sixty cubits long and twenty cubits wide (using the cubit of the old standard). (4) The portico at the front of the temple was twenty cubits long across the width of the building and twenty cubits high.
He overlaid the inside with pure gold.

This chapter of the Bible is dedicated to giving us details of how King Solomon built the magnificent temple for God. So much detail is given it’s almost boring and one almost wonders why. When God commanded Noah to build the Ark, the Bible also gives a lot of details on how it was done, including its measurements. It becomes clear as we read scripture that attention to detail is the critical step to excellence in anything and everything!

The Bible has many records of genealogies. Details of how people are related. The Bible has got details of certain stories of events and wars. Attention to detail is the critical step to excellence in anything and everything.

In our text today and its entire chapter, we are given details on when exactly the building of the temple began, the second day of the second month in the fourth year of Solomon’s reign. Isn’t that so detailed? The measurements of the entire building and materials used are given. The Bible calls our attention to details, which is a critical step to excellence in anything and everything!

When signing agreements and contracts, the secret of success or failure is in the details, the small print. If you are getting a loan from a financial institution, the problem is not the general concept that you are getting the loan, but the details that could harm you. The details could be that the interest rate can change anytime without your notice among others. The secret to success is not just the bigger picture but attention to detail.

When you fall in love today, you don’t enter into marriage today, you date and court for some two years or so, in order to get the details about the other person. The secret of success or failure is not in the general concept but in the details. To succeed always find out the details!

For financial success, be keen on the details of your spending. Financial experts have rightly said that if you can track the details of your spending, you have taken a critical step to financial excellence. If you take note of how you spend every bit of your money, you will change how you spend it. You will be shocked that you spend too much money going shopping and you will reorganize your shopping trips. You may also discover you spent so much money on sweets and sodas and you will now plan to cut down. You may also discover you spent a lot on phone calls and internet access and you will subscribe to a cheaper plan. The attention to the details of your spending changes your spending. It is a critical step to financial excellence!

If you consistently save small amounts of money, it will surely grow into a huge amount. When small details are put together, the whole picture changes. Have attention to details and the small things that can easily be ignored and you will have taken a critical step to excellence.

We should not major in minors or minor in majors. Have attention to details of the major, that is the point. Both the majors and minors have their details. Attention to detail is what moves us towards excellence!

Even matters of faith require attention to detail. It is not just enough that this church calls on Jesus and uses the Bible. Go to the details of what they believe and don’t believe from the Bible. The details will reveal to what extent you are actually faithful to God or defiant. There are Christian churches that believe that Jesus is not God He is a creature, can you ignore such detail and claim that any church is ok? There are churches whose main structure is to enrich the leader and owner, and therefore to keep everyone in for their offerings the service is designed to only preach prosperity and blessings, and ignore everything else from scripture, can you ignore such details?

Treatment of the sick requires attention to detail, that is why two people with the same sickness may not use the same medication. Details of body weight. Details of age. Details of severity. Those details make treatment different. Can you ignore the details? Our health requires attention to details of what we eat, how much we rest, how much we exercise, etc. If we ignore the details, a health breakdown is on the way and we will be forced to focus on those details. We will be forced to think of how much sugar we take, how much salt, etc.

Relationships require attention to detail. If you are keen on what makes your relations happy and what makes them strain, you will know what to keep doing and what to avoid. Attention to detail will be a great blessing to how you relate with people. If you don’t care then you are selfish and self-centered.

Attention to details of your dressing will change how you present yourself. It improves your image. Think of how you look and what it tells the world about you. Attention to detail will improve you. Is that too much cologne? Does that hair need fixing? Are the nails trimmed or harboring dirt? Are that clothes ironed? That attention to detail will make you stand out. It is the critical step to excellence!

Once you discover the value of details, you will have a notebook that records things you shouldn’t forget. You will use calendars to record coming events. You will plan your next day before you go to sleep. You will be able to go through the day exactly knowing what you need to achieve. You will be able to assess how you are doing in relation to your goals in life. Attention to detail is the critical step to excellence!

May God grant us the habit of having attention to details on things that matter, and may this be the critical step to excellence in all that we do, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
