Ezekiel 5:5
“This is what the Sovereign LORD says: This is Jerusalem, which I have set in the center of the nations, with countries all around her.
Ezekiel 5:6
Yet in her wickedness she has rebelled against my laws and decrees more than the nations and countries around her. She has rejected my laws and has not followed my decrees.
Ezekiel 5:7
“Therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says: You have been more unruly than the nations around you and have not followed my decrees or kept my laws. You have not even conformed to the standards of the nations around you.
This is the message from God through the prophet Ezekiel. God tells Ezekiel that He chose Israel (represented by Jerusalem) to set a standard of right living among nations. God, therefore, planted Jerusalem at the center of all nations. Many countries surrounded Jerusalem. God’s intention was that they learn to fear the God of heaven by observing the lifestyle of the Israelites.
God tells Ezekiel that Jerusalem was so wicked that she rebelled against God. The scary part is that God says their wickedness was worse than that of the nations they came to teach. They performed so poorly, more than the wicked people they were to teach God’s will.
The lifestyle of the Israelites was worse than that of the nations they came to teach better lifestyles. What an indictment! The teacher has failed more than the students he or she came to teach?
God has sent us to teach the nations not to worship other gods, but we end up worshiping material, career, and loved ones. Other nations worship their gods once in a while, we worship these things and even miss church services. Aren’t we teachers performing worse than students?
God has sent the church to teach the world forgiveness and love. The politicians hate each other but embrace and work together on new alliances after the elections. In God’s church, the enmity and hatred are masked and run deep. There is no chance of forgiving each other and we treat each other with permanent suspicion. Aren’t we worse than the worldly politicians and others we were sent to teach?
God has sent us to teach the world not to steal. The world steals from fellow human beings and public institutions. But we who preach against theft are at the same time robbing God in tithes and offerings and even his church. Aren’t we worse thieves than the thieves we were sent to preach to?
God has sent us to open outright sinners. sinners who acknowledge they are sinners. Sinners who do not pretend they are good. We plead with them to stop sinning and come to Jesus. Yet we who preach to open sinners are actually secret sinners. Doing the very things we preach against. The difference is we do it in secret or in hiding. An open sinner has a chance to be reached and be saved. a secret sinner is in denial. We as secret sinners, or hypocrites, are worse than the open sinners we go out to teach and preach to daily.
May God save us from being teachers who are worse off compared to the students they are supposed to help. May God help us to take up our responsible position and be exemplary to all, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
