Jonah 1:17
Now the LORD provided a huge fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
Jonah 2:1
From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the LORD his God.
Jonah 2:10
And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.
Jonah had several problems. He was running away from an assignment from God. He had caused losses to fellow travelers on the ship. He now committed suicide by attempting to drown but it didn’t work because a fish swallowed him.
Now in the belly of the fish, he waited to die. Three days later he was not dead. He was now cornered. He couldn’t set himself free and he couldn’t die. He was now at the mercy of God. Then Jonah prayed to God, a prayer recorded in the ten verses of chapter two of Jonah. The chapter begins by telling us that a cornered Jonah decided to address God in prayer. The chapter ends by telling us that God addressed the fish, which was Jonah’s problem. If you address God, He will address the fish!
Jonah didn’t pray the first day. Jonah didn’t pray the second day. When things were thick and death wasn’t an option, on the third day, Jonah turned to God his only remaining option. If you address God, He will address the fish!
Jonah was cornered. Are you cornered? Is there no way out? Are all human abilities exhausted? Are you now at the mercy of whatever happens? If you address God, He will address the fish!
What fish are you cornered in? Are you cornered in the belly of the fish of finances? Are you cornered in the belly of the fish of stressful relationships? Are you cornered in the belly of the fish of a sickly body? Are you cornered in the belly of the fish of academic difficulties? If you address God, He will address the fish!
Matthew 6:33
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
If you seek God in prayer, then seek Him in repentance, confession, and praise, then God will respond. God will respond by addressing your problems today. Jonah addressed God by praising God under all circumstances. Jonah addressed God by confessing his wrong. Then God responded to the fish by telling it to vomit Jonah at the right and safe place.
When God addresses your problems, they become a ladder to a better and safe place. When God addressed the fish it vomited Jonah at the right and safe place. If you address God, He will address the fish!
We need someone who can address the fish. We are trapped in the belly of various fish. Dear God, we are addressing You, forgive us our sins, teach us Your paths, and please address these fish, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
