Matthew 9:37-38 (NIV) – 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”
Jesus declared that there is a shortage of workers. At the time of the shortage of workers there were many Rabbinical Schools churning out religious experts. The Shammai School and the Hillel School. There were Synagogue schools for basic education. Schools where religious leaders were trained existed, yet Jesus tells us that the workers are few!
Priests and High Priests existed at the time of Jesus. Annas was a former high priest. Caiaphas was the high priest. Zechariah the father to John the Baptist was a priests. There were priests serving the people, yet Jesus said, the workers are few!
There were prophets at the time of Jesus. Luke chapter two tells us about Anna the prophet. John the Baptist was also a prophet. Prophets existed, yet Jesus tells us that the workers are few!
There were religious factions that different types of spirituality. There were essenes like John the Baptist. There were zealots like Jesus’s disciple known as Simon the zealot. There were Sadducces. There were Pharisees, and Apostle Paul who appeared later was one of the them. There were teachers of the law, Laywers, and even Scribes, yet Jesus declared that the workers are few!
The environment at Jesus’s time was religiously charged, yet Jesus said the workers are few. Clearly Jesus distinguished the religious leaders and other influencers of His time from the legit workers who would serve God’s purposes. That is why He declared that the workers are few!
The abundance of graduates of Theology does not address the shortage of workers. The workers are not merely graduates of Theology, no, they are individuals bent focused on God’s purposes. Theology graduates are many, but the workers are few!
More pastors and religious leaders are being employed, yet the workers are few. Men and women assigned ecclesiastical territories may be professionals but not the workers the Father wants. They may be doing their professional best, but not God’s will. Hence Christ’s conclusion – that the Workers are few!
There are many zealous groups that support and oppose the church. Groups focused on end times. Groups focused on health. Groups focused on holiness. Groups focused on prayers. Groups focused on evangelism. Yet the workers are few! They may be serving their own narrow interests, but not the kingdom of God. That is why Jesus declared that the workers are few!
Matthew 7:21-23 (NIV) – 21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’
The end of time will reveal that even people who did wonders were not the workers that God wanted. Many people testify on how they preached and exorcised demons. Many people are baptizing great numbers of people. Many are sharing updated prophetic messages, yet Jesus will tell them at the end, I didn’t know you, you were not legit workers. There are so many people doing many things around that are reported and are mesmerizing, but the workers are few!
At this point we are at a loss on how do we solve the shortage of workers? How do we identify the legit workers? It seems even the best amongst us, may not be the workers God seeks.
Matthew 9:38 (NIV) – Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”
We do not have the capacity and authority to get the legit workers. Jesus says the best we can do is ask the Lord of the harvest. Nothing more, nothing less. The responsibility is for the Lord of the harvest. Only the Lord of the harvest can identify and engage legit workers.
1 Far and near the fields are teeming
with the waves of ripened grain;
far and near their gold is gleaming
o’er the sunny slope and plain.
Refrain:
Lord of harvest, send forth reapers;
hear us, Lord, to thee we cry;
send them now the sheaves to gather,
ere the harvest-time pass by.
2 Send them forth with morn’s first beaming,
send them in the noontide’s glare;
when the sun’s last rays are gleaming,
bid them gather ev’rywhere. [Refrain]
3 Thou whom Christ the Lord is sending,
gather now the sheaves of gold;
heav’nward then at evening wending,
thou shalt come with joy untold. [Refrain]
Only the Lord of the harvest determines who the workers are. Only the Lord of the harvest can send legit workers. Therefore, Jesus says, ask the Lord of the harvest to send legit workers to address the shortage.
Only the Lord of the harvest can legitimize what Theological Schools and seminaries are doing and producing. Only the Lord of the harvest can put value in what committees that hire and transfer people, are doing. Only the Lord of the harvest can identify the best local church leaders for the next year or two. When handling workers issues, we may acknowledge our incompetence and then do what Jesus said, ask the Lord of the harvest to send workers.
Dear Lord of the harvest, make me a worker, a legit worker and send me as You please. May it please You to use me to address the shortage of workers. Dear Lord of the harvest, send forth your own set of workers to training schools and to ecclesiastical territories. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
