2 John 1:1-2
To the lady chosen by God and to her children, whom I love in the truth —and not I only, but also all who know the truth — because of the truth, which lives in us and will be with us forever:
Apostle John was so concerned about the truth, that we should question ourselves whether we are as concerned about the truth as he was. Could it be that we do not take the truth as seriously as he did? John warns believers that right in church error will be preached as truth. Right in church deceivers will come and deceive people with what looks like the truth but is a lie.
Apostle John salutes the church in our text today and he punctuates his greetings and message with the word truth. He refers to the church as children he loves in the truth. Then he says, the greetings come from him and all those who know the truth. Then he says the truth which lives in us will never abandon us but will be with us forever. The keyword in his salutation and message is the word truth. Are you as concerned for the truth?
What distinguishes God’s people from the lost world, is their belief in truth and practicing of truth. What unites us together in any fellowship of genuine Christians is truth. We are united in truth. Inspired by truth. We worship in the place and call each other brethren because we are bound by the truth.
The following are texts in which John the writer makes a reference to the truth. The context places the truth in a significant position that should not be ignored.
- John 8:32 you will know the TRUTH and the TRUTH will set you free
- John 14:6 Jesus said, “I am the way the TRUTH and the life…”
- John 18:23 If I spoke the TRUTH, why do you strike me?
- John 18:37 Everyone on the side of TRUTH listens to me.

- 1 John 1:6 If we walk in darkness, we lie and do not live out the TRUTH.
- 1 John 1:8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the TRUTH is not in us.
- 1 John 2:8 Yet I am writing you a new command; its TRUTH is seen in him…and TRUE lightis already shining.
- 1 John 2:21 I do not write to you because you do not know the TRUTH, but because you do know it and because no lie comes from the TRUTH.
- 1 John 3:18 Let us love with actions and in TRUTH
- 1 John 4:6 The Spirit of TRUTH and the spirit of falsehood.
- 1 John 5:6 the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the TRUTH
- 1 John 5:20 we are in Him who is TRUE….He is the TRUE God and eternal life.
- 2 John 1:1 her children , whom I love in the TRUTH

- 3 John 1:4 walking in the TRUTH
- 3 John 1:8 that we may work together for the TRUTH
- 3 John 1:12 Demetrius is well spoken of even by the TRUTH itself
- Revelation 19:11 whose rider is called faithful and TRUE
- Revelation 21:5 these words are trustworthy and TRUE
- Revelation 22:6 these words are trustworthy and TRUE
Aren’t we right to conclude that Apostle John had a serious concern for the truth while writing to the church? He wanted believers to be keen on being on the side of truth. He was concerned that his readers will be satisfied with anything that is taught in church without interrogating whether it is truth. Are you as concerned for the truth?
The truth that God exists brings us together. The truth that Jesus died to save us and now we are forgiven, brings us closer to each other. The truth is that the Bible is God’s word that binds us together. These truths and many others are what distinguish us from others. John was so concerned for the truth. Are you as concerned for the truth?
Do you care what the truth is? Does it matter to you if what is preached to you is the truth? Does it worry you if there are Bible truths you have ignored or broken? Are you disturbed whether you are attending the true church? Do you ask yourself whether the prophet or Apostle you listen to is a false prophet? Are you as concerned for the truth?
To know the truth and not follow it is not worth knowing. To know the truth then ignore it is a waste of the learning effort. It is God’s expectation that when you know the truth, the truth immediately affects your life positively. If after reading God’s word nothing changes, it was not worth reading. We best show concern for the truth by living according to that truth. Are you as concerned for the truth?
When the truth is your greatest concern, you will be willing to die for it. In Daniel 3:16-18 the three Hebrew men told the king that even if they die, they will stand for the truth that idols should not be worshipped. They were concerned for the truth and not life. Are you as concerned for the truth?
In Daniel 6:10 Daniel was told that an order had been given that everyone should not pray. Daniel knew the truth that prayer is critical to the welfare of one’s life. Daniel continued with his prayer life because he was concerned about the truth. Are you as concerned about the truth?
Dear God, give us a concern for the truth. Help us not to follow what we have always known, but only the truth. Help us not to follow what is comfortable and convenient, but only the truth. Grant us a passion to search for the truth in the Bible and the grace to find it and the power to follow it, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
