1 Chronicles 5:20
They were helped in fighting them, and God delivered the Hagrites and all their allies into their hands, because they cried out to him during the battle. He answered their prayers, because they trusted in him.
We battle many things in life. We battle diseases. We battle poverty. We battle ignorance. We battle addiction. We battle for sanity amidst constant pressure. We battle for survival. We battle to secure our relationships. We are fighting many battles. Are you in a battle?
The tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh went to war against Hagrites, Jetur, Naphish, and Nodab, 1 Chronicles 5:18-19. These were battles to fully occupy the Promised Land. They fought either to expand territory or they fought because these neighbors provoked them. God had asked them to push out all the Canaanite tribes, but they were unable to push all of them out at once because of various reasons. Therefore such battles continued many years after they entered Canaan under the leadership of Joshua.
No battle is easy. In battle there are losses. In battle, lives are lost. We always hope the battle ends soon. We always hope that we get what we were looking for when we go to battle. We always hope that our opponent loses and we are winners. Those expectations put a lot of pressure on us while we are in the various battles of life. Are you in a battle?
Our text today tells us that Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh received help during the battle. This help could have come from the other tribes of Israel. In the battles of life, we need others. We need friends and even family. Have friends and family who can help you in the battles of life. Do not go alone to the battles of life. The Bible says they were helped in the fight. You need to be helped. Get help from professionals. Get help from those older than you. Do not be in battle alone. Are you in a battle?
They did the fighting but God delivered their enemies to them. They did the fighting but God granted the victory. God will give victory to those who are engaged in the fight. Do your level best even if it’s insignificant, when God blesses it, it becomes a victory. Do not fear and give up. Fight! God will deliver victory. Are you in a battle? Fight!
God helped them because they cried out to Him during the battle. Are you in a battle? Cry out to God. Do not suffer in silence, cry out to God. Are you in pain? Cry out to God. Are you in shame and untold trouble? Cry out to God. Have you failed at the most critical time? Cry out to God. Have you let yourself and many others down? Cry out to God! God gave them victory because they cried out to Him during the battle. Are you in a battle?
God answered their prayers because they trusted Him. In your battles, you must trust God that He will deliver you. You must trust that God has your best interest at heart. You must trust that God will provide. You must trust that God will bless the little that you are doing. Are you in a battle? Trust God! Help us to trust you, dear God, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
