Nahum 2:8
Nineveh is like a pool
whose water is draining away.
“Stop! Stop!” they cry,
but no one turns back.
Nineveh was a city full of wickedness. Nineveh was cruel. Nineveh was a terror to its neighbors and enemies. Nineveh was guilty of everything God hated. Nineveh was guilty of the deaths of the innocent.
Jonah received a call to go preach repentance to Nineveh. Jonah refused to go and preferred to do the impossible – run away from God. Jonah hated Nineveh. Jonah’s contemporaries hated Nineveh. Jonah also feared Nineveh. However, Jonah knew there was nothing to fear if God was sending him. What made Jonah run away was hatred. He wished Nineveh received the worst punishment possible.
During Jonah’s time, God forgave Nineveh. As Nahum comes, his ministry is focused on Nineveh just like Jonah’s. The difference is that this time around God has closed the door for Nineveh. No more mercy for Nineveh. Nahum is not asking Nineveh to repent. Nahum is telling Nineveh and the Israelites that it’s over for the wicked city. Nahum announces the end of Nineveh’s reign of terror.
As Nahum announces, Nineveh is still thriving in its evil practices. As Nahum announces it doesn’t seem like Nineveh will ever be brought down. As Nahum announces God’s word against Nineveh, there is no evidence that it can happen.
Nahum declares that though Nineveh is thriving it is not. Though Nineveh is doing well it is not. Though it seems these are the best days for Nineveh they are not. Though it seems the future is bright for Nineveh it is not. Nahum explains what is happening to the thriving Nineveh by comparing it to a leaking pool. A draining pool.
A pool that is leaking or draining may seem full and promising but because of the leakage, it is not. The leakage is its downfall. The draining though it is slow will surely dry the pool. Nineveh looks okay but it is leaking, it is draining.
As Nahum preaches, Nineveh is proud of itself and is chest-thumping. Are you proud of a leaking pool? What is there to be proud of in a leaking pool? What is the future of a leaking pool? Are you proud of a leaking pool?
Nineveh is symbolic of all of us in our wicked sinful lives. We seem to be thriving but God is telling us to repent. The life of sin is a life of a draining pool. To be so comfortable in sin is as good as being proud of a leaking pool. Are you proud of a leaking pool?
Life without Jesus is a leaking pool. Money without Jesus is a leaking pool. Academic attainments are as good as a leaking pool. Without Jesus, our health is a draining pool. Without Jesus, our relationships are a draining pool. Are you proud of a draining pool?
Do you see wicked people who are living admirable lives? Those are draining pools. Do you know thieves who have stolen and are now living comfortable lives? Those are leaking pools. Do you know arrogant and hostile people who seem established and immovable? Those are leaking pools. Are you planning to come to Jesus but meanwhile you are still in the life of sin? Until you come to Jesus, you are a leaking pool!
It is only in Jesus that nothing leaks. In Jesus, a small insignificant pool will grow into a large dam because it doesn’t leak but keeps receiving blessings. A life of sin is a life of looking good when everything is bad. A life of sin is a life of having a draining pool in all aspects of life. May God save us from sin and from leakages that reduce life quality, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
