Forward Focus Is The Only Way Forward

Proverbs 4:25
Let your eyes look straight ahead;
fix your gaze directly before you.

Proverbs 4:26
Give careful thought to the paths for your feet
and be steadfast in all your ways.

Proverbs 4:27
Do not turn to the right or the left;
keep your foot from evil.

King Solomon the wisest man to ever live is the writer of most of these proverbs including this one. Solomon advises his sons through these proverbs. Several times in this chapter he tells his son that listening to instructions is life, is equivalent to gaining or preserving life.

Solomon wishes his sons well and therefore from God given wisdom he gives the best advice that is good for everybody. We do well to take heed of his advice. Among the many things Solomon said to his children, he told them in our text today that they need to fix their gaze forward. Focus forward is the only way forward!

Solomon tells us to look straight ahead. Straight ahead where the goal or trophy is. Do not lose focus of your goal. Many things, interesting things will always happen around us, but our energies and inspiration should be the goal that is ahead of us. Do not let anyone or anything cause you to lose focus. Focus forward is the only way forward!

Discouragement will come and tempt you to address them. Solomon says, focus on the great goal ahead of you. Pleasure and leisure will seek your indulgence regularly. Solomon advises that your safety and success is in keeping your eye on the goal. Focus forward is the only way forward!

Solomon repeats for purposes of emphasis that we should fix our gaze directly before us. Lock your sight on what is a head and refuse to be distracted. To build your relationship, lock your gaze on your spouse and ignore the emerging distractions. To succeed in your studies lock your focus on good grades and not on quality of life in school or even how the school is managed. To succeed in saving money for a big project, lock your focus on that project. Ignore temptation to divert the money to the ever emerging emergencies. To use a loan properly, lock your focus on its purpose and do not yield to temptation to use a bit of it for something else. If you are in business, lock your focus on growing the business and not on its numerous teething problems of the first three years. Focus forward is the only way forward!

Solomon in the next verse tells us to mind our present pathway safety. While focused ahead do not make mistakes that will jeopardize your arrival at that destination. Look ahead but do not be careless on where you step. You may be focused forward but fall in a pit today. Be careful on how your present decisions are so that they dont affect the future. Focus forward is the only way forward!

Your daily steps should safely take us to the future. If you entertain laziness today, it will jeopardize your future. If you start abusing drugs, tobbacco and alcohol today, it will jeopardize your future. If you allow yourself to be addicted to a phone or internet, it will affect your future. If you brood impatience, distrust and anger it will affect your relationships. Solomon says we should mind our present steps while locked on the goal ahead. Focus forward is the only way forward!

Finally, Solomon ends by reminding us and repeating what he just said. Do not turn to the left or to the right. Focus on your goal. That is the only way to succeed. Many goals and new year resolutions remain dormant because we keep turning left or right. You wake up to read or clean the house, but you decide to first check a TV program or updates on social media. Those are the left and right turns from your goal. Focus forward is the only way forward!

You cant write a book or do anything worthwhileif you keep turning left and right. When you keep procrastinating. Let me do this first then address my main goal. Let me eat first. Let me catch a nap. Let me rush to town. Let me make one phone call. Let me rest a little and gain energy. All those are left and right turns. Why not tell those things to wait you address your goals first? Why not check your phone, sleep, eat after making progress on your goals? Solomon tells us not to turn left or right. Focus forward is the only way forward!
