Jeremiah 4:14
Jerusalem, wash the evil from your heart and be saved.
How long will you harbor wicked thoughts?
FYI – For Your Information.
God warns Israel of coming disaster because of their sins. Disaster will befall Israel because they have offended God. God through Jeremiah describes how an unstoppable attacking nation is coming to painfully punish Israel because they ignored God and the things of God.
Amidst this disaster and punishment talk, God injects hope as He always does. In our text today, God injects hope into this sad discussion. God tells Israel that it’s not too late to be saved. God tells Israel to wash the evil from their hearts and be saved. The problem of sin is a corrupt heart and not just the manifested deeds. The deeds are bad, but they originate from a corrupt heart. God doesn’t tell them to stop bad deeds, no, God goes for the source, and that is the heart. Wash the evil from your heart and be saved.
Many of us struggle with deeds unsuccessfully because we do not address the heart that originates the problem. You can’t stop drinking alcohol, smoking and abusing drugs by just a Rehabilitation Centre or personal resolve, no, you need to be converted. You need a recommitment to Jesus. You need to identify with a church. You need regular church attendance, Bible study, and prayers because these things aim and changing the heart. if the heart changes then adultery and fornication will go. God goes for the heart that is responsible for all these evils. Wash evil from your heart and be saved.
After that God tells the Israelites to let go of wicked thoughts. How long will you harbor wicked thoughts? Thoughts are extremely private to a person. We can guess what you are thinking and we may be right or wrong, but God doesn’t guess, He knows your thoughts. Your thoughts inspire your direction and God warns you to let go of bad thoughts. FYI God knows your thoughts!
God and everybody else know our actions. God and everybody else can hear words that are uttered. However, it is only God who knows your thoughts. FYI God knows your thoughts!
You can say one thing while you mean another because people cannot read your thoughts. You can do something and hide the intention, but you cannot hide intentions from God. FYI God knows your thoughts!
Ecclesiastes 12:14
For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil.
1 Corinthians 4:5
Therefore do not pronounce judgment before the time, before the Lord comes, who will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Then each one will receive his commendation from God.
God promises to expose motives. Purposes of the heart. Thoughts that are deeply hidden. God promises to make open our deep secret and highly confidential discussion. Secrets from secret meetings will be exposed by God. God knows what you speak even in your mother tongue. When you consider evil in your hearts, God watches. FYI God knows your thoughts!
Now that God knows our thoughts, we need to cleanse them, for we all stand before a holy God. Since we can’t hide anything or any thoughts from God, we have one option, and that is to stop harboring wicked thoughts. May God save me from secret sins and help me to cleanse my thoughts. Help me to stop harboring wicked thoughts, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
