John 9:41 (NIV) – Jesus said, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.
These are the words with which the narrative of the healing of the man born blind ends. These focus is no longer just on physical blindness but also spiritual blindness. One can be blind in many ways.
A socially blind person does not see social signals that would make his or her life better. They may physically see but they are socially blind. They may claim to see yet socially they don’t see.
A financially blind person, will not see financial indicators that prompt him or her to make better choices. The person may claim to see but they make poor choices and keep suffering the consequences of financial blindness, yet the person physically sees. Their misfortune is that they claim to see when they don’t.
A spiritually blind person may not see spiritual things that require repentance and dependence on God. Consequently they go through life thinking all is well but they are perishing spiritually. They can’t be taught anything new spiritually. They can’t be guided spiritually, because they claim to see yet they don’t !
John 9:39 (NIV) – Jesus said, “For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind.”
Jesus came to preach a final judgment that determines what is right and what is wrong. Those who were wrong are the blind. The wrong heard Jesus and got converted and followed the right way. Therefore the wrong aka the blind were able to see. They were healed from their blindness.
On the other heard those who believed they are right, refused to learn anything from Jesus. Those who were right in their own eyes, are those who were not blind, they were seeing. Yet because they who were seeing refused to learn anything from Jesus, they stopped seeing and became blind.
When in spiritual matters you claim to know and refuse to be reachable and guidable, then we can say that you see but have preferred to become blind. You claim to see, but you don’t. Those who see have become blind!
Are you responsive to what the Bible teaches or you are stuck to what you have always known even if it contradicts the Bible? You speak in tongues even when the Bible teaches that your way of speaking in tongues is wrong. You stick to a day of worship in spite of what the Bible teaches. Your argue to defend your refusal to attend worship or return tithes and offerings. You are the people who are seeing but have chosen blindness.
When an openly sinful person accepts Jesus, the blind have chosen to see. When an obvious sinner accepts baptism and spiritual guidance, they are no longer blind, but can now see! Are you the blind who has chosen to see by accepting to learn and be guided? Are you the seeing who have chosen blindness by refusing to learn new things?
John 9:39-41 (NIV) – 39 Jesus said, “For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind.” 40 Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, “What? Are we blind too?” 41 Jesus said, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.
Pharisees and other religious leaders immediately understood that they are the seeing who have chosen to be blind, because they rejected guidance from Jesus. They immediately confront Jesus by asking Him if He just called them blind. Jesus responds by telling them that their situation is worse because they claim to see when they don’t!
If you claim to see when you don’t, you won’t be healed. If you claim to see when you don’t, you will not be guided like other blind people are guided. If you claim to see when you don’t, you will be held accountable for mistakes you make as a blind person, because you claim to see. In your blind state you will make numerous grave mistakes, but no one will sympathize with you, because you claim to see. It is dangerous to claim to see when you don’t!
It is dangerous to be over confident spiritually. You can’t be helped because you claim to see when you don’t . It is dangerous to be unteachable in any aspect of life, socially, mentally, financially, etc. You can’t be helped because you claim you have made no mistake and need no guidance. You claim to see but you don’t. Those who could help you abandon you because you claim to be okay. You claim to see when you don’t!
In what areas of life have you refused guidance and intervention? You claim to see when probably you don’t. Have you refused guidance in your relationship and marriage? Have you rejected guidance in your academic matters? Do you dismiss everyone in your financial matters because you know it all? You claim to see when you don’t ? The danger is you won’t be helped, you won’t get better and you will be guilty of your failure.
May God save us from the unguidable and unteachable spirit. May God save us from claiming to see when we don’t. May God save us all round, spiritually, mentally, socially, financially and physically. In Jesus name, Amen!
