When You Are Thrown Out

John 9:34-35 (NIV) – 34 To this they replied, “You were steeped in sin at birth; how dare you lecture us!” AND THEY THREW HIM OUT. 35 JESUS HEARD THAT THEY HAD THROWN HIM OUT, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”

The Religious leaders were seriously disturbed that Jesus had healed a man born blind. They were concerned that this was an indisputable evidence that Jesus was a legitimate Messiah. This healing also came with the upending of a popular theology that blindness was a consequence of an individual’s sin. This healing was an antithesis of everything they stood for.

In an attempt to prove Jesus wrong, the Religious leaders kept interviewing the man who was healed. After many attempts they failed to persuade the healed man to speak against Jesus. The Religious leaders threw the healed man out.

Throwing him out could mean throwing him out of the Synagogue, which is akin to excommunication or disfellowship. Which the parents of the healed man had feared would happen to them.

John 9:20-23 (NIV) – 20 “We know he is our son,” the parents answered, “and we know he was born blind. 21 But how he can see now, or who opened his eyes, we don’t know. Ask him. He is of age; he will speak for himself.” 22 His parents said this because THEY WERE AFRAID of the Jewish leaders, who already had decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Messiah WOULD BE PUT OUT OF THE SYNAGOGUE. 23 That was why his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.”

Throwing him out therefore could have meant that he had been thrown out of the Synagogue never to return. He was considered an outcast in that community. The healed man was thrown out!

Thrown out could also mean being kicked out of the interrogation room. An act of shame and embarrassment. A public act that demeaned the healed man.

When Jesus heard that the healed man had been thrown out, Jesus went to look for him. Anyone who is thrown out illegitimately will be sought by Jesus. When you are thrown out, Jesus comes looking for you. No one who is unfairly thrown out is ever alone. No one who is thrown out for Jesus’s sake is ever alone. Jesus presents Himself to all who are thrown out!

Genesis 16:6-10 (NIV) – 6 “Your slave is in your hands, ” Abram said. “Do with her whatever you think best.” Then Sarai mistreated Hagar; so she fled from her. 7 The angel of the LORD found Hagar near a spring in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur. 8 And he said, “Hagar, slave of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?” “I’m running away from my mistress Sarai,” she answered. 9 Then the angel of the LORD told her, “Go back to your mistress and submit to her.” 10 The angel added, “I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count.”

When Hagar was thrown out by Sarah the wife of Abraham, the angel of the LORD met her in that lonely desert. Anyone who is thrown out will meet Jesus. Anyone in distress of rejection will be comforted by Jesus.

If you have been thrown out, look around, you are not alone. If you have been thrown out, listen carefully, God is speaking with you. God waits to comfort and help those who are thrown out.

Jesus met the healed man and asked him if he believes in Him. When you are thrown out , believe in Jesus who shows up for those who are thrown out. When you are thrown out, believe in Jesus who ensures those thrown out are not lonely. When you are thrown out, keep your faith alive!

When the man responded in the affirmative that he believes in Jesus, the conversation ended right there. That is all you need. If you believe in Jesus, He will help you handle and deal with the aftermath of being thrown out.
