Genesis 7:5 – And Noah DID ALL that the LORD commanded him. (NIV)
Genesis 7:5 Noah DID EVERYTHING God commanded him. (Message Bible)
God tells us in His inspired word that Noah was great. Noah was great therefore his story is permanently in the Bible. Noah was great therefore God saved him and his family. Don’t we want to be as great as Noah?
We also learn that Noah was loved by God. God loved Noah that He even told him His plans to destroy the world. God loved Noah and saved him from the deluge. Don’t we want to be loved?
For us to be like Noah we must do what he did. We must learn to be like him. Our Bible text today reveals something unique about Noah – he did everything that God commanded him!
Noah did not rationalize that some were reasonable and others were not. He actually did everything. Noah did everything God said both the difficult and the easy. Noah did everything God commanded even when it wasn’t convenient. He did everything, how much have you done?
It was ridiculous to build an Ark but because God said it, he did it. He preached about a coming flood for 120 years, too long a time that people thought he was deranged, but because God said it, he did it. He did everything, how much have you done?
God brought dangerous and safe animals into the Ark, then told Noah to join them inside the Ark. That was very risk, yet because God said, he did it. For seven days he stayed inside the Ark that probably was stinking and dangerous, but he stayed because God said it. No rain for seven days but he stayed in and didn’t march out in protest because God told him to stay in. He did everything, how much have you done?
Genesis 6:22 – Noah did everything just as God commanded him.
It may seem like Noah did everything that God commanded only once in the story, but that is not true. The previous chapter repeats that Noah did everything. The story of Noah is punctuated with the fact that he did everything God commanded. It was Noah’s habit to do everything God commands. He did everything, how much have you done?
What is your habit? Do you do everything God commands? Are you known as obedient? Are you fully obedient or selectively obedient? He did everything, how much have you done?
Matthew 28:20 – and teaching them TO OBEY EVERYTHING I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
In the great commission we are commanded to teach new converts that God expects them to do everything revealed in scripture. Yet when we come across topics that seem controversial we make God commands seem optional. Yet God says teach them to obey everything!
If a new convert asks if their conversion means their dressing may have to change, many an evangelist would water down God’s expectations by suggesting that it’s not a serious matter. Is God concerned with how we dress? Yes He is! He even dressed Adam and Eve properly in Eden. Yet many times we make it look like it’s not compulsory. Are we teaching them to obey everything?
If a new convert asks if they must make dietary adjustments because of their conversion, we water down the requirement as if God gave no command. Yet God has always been concerned with the diet of His people. Instead we rationalize and dismiss God’s requirements through clever arguments. Are we teaching them to obey everything?
Matthew 15:3 – Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition?
Matthew 15:9 – They worship me in vain;
their teachings are merely human rules. ’ ”
Mark 7:8 – You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions.”
Mark 7:9 – And he continued, “You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe your own traditions!
Jesus said that His people had developed an evil way of setting aside what God said and replaced it with their traditions and beliefs. God gave a command and if they are uncomfortable with it, they rationalize on why it should be set aside. They don’t obey everything!
If a new convert asks on how seriously we should take the writings of Ellen G White, some people will water down the writings as less important. At this point they cleverly set aside the commands of God and replace with human traditions and beliefs. Do you obey everything?
If a new convert asks if they should stay in church the whole day and attend all programs – what do we tell them? Particularly when you don’t attend all. Don’t we water it down to justify our infractions? Do we teach them everything?
God expects everything to be obeyed that touches every aspect of our life. Are we obedient to everything in returning tithes and offering? Are we obedient in forgiving everyone who offends us? Are we obedient to loving and submitting as he commanded spouses to do? Are we obedient in keeping the Sabbath? Are we obedient to everything or we cleverly set aside what God said and consequently disobey Him? Noah did everything God commanded, how much have you done?
Dear God we are failures because we don’t do everything. Help us to do everything You have commanded. Help us to obey everything. May we like Noah enjoy Your favour and blessings, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
