Isaiah 5:11-12
(11) Woe to those who rise early in the morning
to run after their drinks,
who stay up late at night
till they are inflamed with wine.
(12) They have harps and lyres at their banquets,
pipes and timbrels and wine,
but they have no regard for the deeds of the LORD,
no respect for the work of his hands.
Prophet Isaiah narrated an unfortunate situation. He tells us that there are people who rise up very early in the morning to go look for alcohol. They also stay late enjoying alcohol and other drinks that make them feel good.
Prophet Isaiah continues to tell us that these same people organize very good music with excellent equipment at their parties. That means they have state-of-the-art entertainment as they have fun regularly.
The problem according to the prophet Isaiah is that these people have no regard for what God does. The problem is that these fun-loving party-hoppers have no respect for what God does. They refuse to think of God or relate to the things of God. They are indifferent to the things of God!
“Woe to those…” means they will regret it. It also means something bad will happen to them. It is also a last warning for them to make changes in their lives to avert the coming disaster.
To enjoy life without an interest in the things of God is a sure way to end in a regrettable disaster. It is a waste to wake up early and sleep late yet have no regard for the things of God. It is unfortunate to live a seemingly admirable life of fun and end in regrets simply because you had no respect for what God does. If this is the case, it’s unfortunate!
As you pursue pleasure, do you have time for God in your life? As you stay late watching movies or doing that which pleases you, do you have some space for God? As you enjoy the money you have worked for, do you have some respect for God?
Without a relationship with God and the things of God, even the best life with the most fun will end in pain, regret, and disaster. Dear God, help me have a place for you in my life, so that I may not be blinded by pleasure and achievement, in Jesus’s name, Amen!
