2 Chronicles 4:18
All these things that Solomon made amounted to so much that the weight of the bronze could not be calculated.
This chapter explains in detail how the Temple was decorated after the construction of the main structure. King Solomon was building a Temple for God. He gave his best. As the attractive artwork is narrated to us, we stand in awe!
The details are impressive. The efforts are commendable. The experts who did the various jobs were the best of their time. Nothing was left to chance. This was being done for God. God who saves. God who feeds. God who fights for us. A God who has never let us down. Such a God deserves the best!
Our text today tells us that the bronze used in that Temple was so much so that it couldn’t be counted. Only an overwhelming giving counts. Solomon was wholeheartedly committed to God and his giving couldn’t be counted. If you can count it doesn’t count!
To count could be to number items to know how many there are. To count also means that something matters. Something is worth considering. As others are thrown out and disposed of this one is counted among the valuable. Therefore if something counts it is important.
It only counts if you can’t count. It is only important if the number doesn’t matter. It only matters if you are not able to focus on how much. If what it is is more important than how much or how many then it really is important. It only counts if you can’t count!
Matthew 18:21
The Parable of the Unmerciful Servant
Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?”
Matthew 18:22
Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.
Forgiveness is only important if you don’t count the number of times you forgive. Forgiveness is genuine and from Christ, if you forgive and have lost the count of the number of times you forgive. It only counts if you can’t count!
Song of Songs 8:7
Many waters cannot quench love;
rivers cannot sweep it away.
If one were to give
all the wealth of one’s house for love,
it would be utterly scorned.
True love can’t be stopped by anything. True love cannot be bought even by a wealth of a whole house. Love needs so much that we can’t count. If you quantify the cost of love materially, it is not love. You can’t count what love costs. Love counts when you can’t count its value and expectations. It only counts if you can’t count!
1 Corinthians 13:4-5
(4) Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. (5) It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, IT KEEPS NO RECORDS OF WRONGS.
True love doesn’t keep a record of wrongs. The record is kept by those who count. Those who count have a problem. What matters is not counted. When a relationship is so important, the wrongs are not counted. It only counts if you can’t count!
1 Thessalonians 5:17
pray continually, (Pray without ceasing)
Things that count can’t be counted. We pray without ceasing. We can’t count prayer because it counts. It only counts if you can’t count!
Church attendance counts if you can’t count. Tithe and offerings count if you can’t count. Trying and trying again to have a good marriage counts if you can’t count. Acts of kindness count if you can’t count. It only counts if you can’t count. May God help us to know how to conduct ourselves so that what counts doesn’t count, in Jesus’s name, Amen!
