This Is What It Means To Be Blessed

Numbers 6:22-23 – The LORD said to Moses, “Tell Aaron and his sons, ‘This is how you are to bless the Israelites. Say to them:

Numbers 6:24-26 – “‘“The LORD bless you

and keep you;

the LORD make his face shine on you

and be gracious to you;

the LORD turn his face toward you

and give you peace. ”’

Numbers 6:27 – “So they will put my name on the Israelites, and I will bless them.”

Do you consider yourself blessed? Could it be what you think are blessings are not actually blessings? What does it mean to be blessed?

Could it be that you think you are not blessed yet you are blessed? Could it be that you should be grateful, but because you don’t know you are blessed, you have not been grateful? What does it mean to be blessed?

Blessings are good wishes for us that God gives. Blessings are good wishes that fellow human beings can give us. What differentiates these wishes from other ordinary wishes is that by divine power they translate into reality and even tangible things.

Just like by the word of God the world was created, so do good wishes become a reality because they are divinely approved and empowered. Not any word can create the world, except the creative word of God. Not any good wish is a blessing, except good wishes that have divine approval and empowerment.

Therefore, when someone blesses you, they are making good wishes for you that God approves and empowers so that they become a reality. When a parent blesses a child, God listens, approves and empowers, so that what the parent said becomes a reality in the child’s life.

When we bless people we are acting on behalf of God. Religious leaders act on behalf of God to bless people. If God hasn’t sent whoever is purporting to bless, nothing will happen, the wishes will remain to be empty words.

We do not pay for blessings because it is God who actualizes the good wishes and not the one who pronounces. The one pronouncing is just a conduit of God’s blessings and can be bypassed by God. Unless God blesses no blessing is a blessing. Therefore, the conduit of blessing is important but not indispensable.

Blessings and curses are the opposite of each other. While blessings are good wishes that God actualizes, curses are bad wishes that God makes them come true. Without God’s approval a curse and a blessing can’t be effective.

In our text today, God tells Moses that Aaron and his sons should bless the Israelites. Aaron and his sons were priests. God instructs them the words they are to speak so that God affects the blessings. These words from God on how to bless people, gives us an idea on what it means to be blessed.

First is that the LORD bless you and keep you. The first evidence of being blessed is when it is God who blesses you. If blessings comes from any other source other than God, it is wasted and will not come true. You are only blessed if it is God blessing you. That is what it means to be blessed!

Secondly God tells Aaron that they should tell the people that God blesses them and keeps them. You are blessed if God keeps you. To be kept is to find safety in God. You are only blessed if your safety is in God. You have no blessings if you are rich enough to hire security and buy guns. You have no blessings if your safety is in your academic qualifications or network of friends and relatives. You are blessed if God keeps you. That is what it means to be blessed!

Thirdly, the LORD make His face to shine upon you. You are blessed if God is looking at you with pleasure as opposed to angrily. When God looks at you nothing will harm you. If God looks at you nothing will go wrong unless it is His strategy to make it better afterwards. You are truly blessed if God makes His face to shine upon you. That is what it means to be blessed!

Fourthly, May God be gracious unto you. Grace is the good that we do not deserve. You are truly blessed when God gives you good things that you do not deserve. Forgiveness you do not deserve. Scholarship that you do not deserve. Jobs you do not deserve. Spouses you do not deserve. Health you do not deserve. You are truly blessed when God is gracious unto you. That is what it means to be blessed!

Fifth, the LORD turn His face towards you. Turning His face in the sense of listening to you. Giving you attention. You are truly blessed when God listens to you and responds to your prayers. That is what it means to be blessed!

Finally, May God give you peace. Only God gives true peace. Peace from stress and depression. Inner peace. Peace at home. Peace at work. Peace in school. Peace in church. Yes even peace with God. You may have everything but without peace you have no blessings. Peace from God is what blessings are made of. This is what it means to be blessed!

God said to Moses that he should instruct Aaron to bless His people with those true blessings. I, as a minister of the gospel and in obedience to God, do pronounce those blessings upon your life today and forever, in Jesus’s name, Amen!
