Amos 7:3 – So the LORD relented. “This will not happen,” the LORD said.
Amos 7:6 – So the LORD relented. “This will not happen either,” the Sovereign LORD said.
What an assurance! God is emphatic and speaks with finality. That whatever was to happen is hereby cancelled. The plan has changed it will not happen!
Isaiah 7:7 – Yet this is what the Sovereign LORD says:“‘It will not take place, it will not happen,
In Isaiah God was speaking about the plans by enemies of Israel. God gives them an assurance that the evil dangerous plans that their enemies have will not happen. Don’t fear the plans they have against you. God tells Prophet Isaiah to assure people that God will defeat those plans and they will not happen.
However, our focus today is on the message of Prophet Amos and not Prophet Isaiah. In the book of Amos the story is different. There are no enemies planning to harm Israel. It is God Himself who promises to harm Israel as a punishment for their sins.
God tells Amos that He plans to bring a swam of locusts to come and destroy crops in the field. Amos is shown in the vision that no crops will be spared. When Amos realized how dangerous God’s plans to punish Israel are, he cried for mercy from God. Then God responded in the words of our text today that the punishment He planned will not happen! God accepted Amos’s pleading for mercy.
Amos 7:3 – God gave in. “It won’t happen,” he said.(Message Bible)
Next vision that Amos had was that of God bringing a very hot fire that dried everything including the sea. This again was a punishment for sin. God was planning to punish Israel. Amos once again cried for mercy and pleaded with God. Amos told God that Israel will not survive this extremely harsh judgment. God gave in. God accepted. God forgave. God suspended His own plans!
Amos 7:6 – God gave in. “All right, this won’t happen either,” God, my Master, said.
In the book of Isaiah, God intervenes against the plans of the enemies of Israel. God assures them that none of the plans will take place. In the books of Amos, God responds to the prayers of forgiveness of sin. Israel deserved harsh punishment. Amos is shown the punishment in vision. He pleads with God to forgive. God responds by promising that the punishments He planned will not happen.
In both instances, God acts in favor of His people. When we don’t deserve the evil our enemies are planning, God assures us that it won’t happen. When we repent from sin, God assures is that the punishment we deserved will not happen. Indeed God loves us and it won’t happen!
Is there evil looming to happen to any of us? Whether we deserve or not, may God step in and declare that it won’t happen! Dear God, speak again as You spoke in the past. Declare again that evil planned against us as punishment or by our enemies won’t happen. It won’t happen, in Jesus’s name, Amen!
