What are you entangled in?

2 Timothy 2:4
No one serving as a soldier gets entangled in civilian affairs, but rather tries to please his commanding officer.

Contemporary English Version
Soldiers on duty don’t work at outside jobs. They try only to please their commanding officer.

Amplified Bible
No soldier in active service gets entangled in the [ordinary business] affairs of civilian life; [he avoids them] so that he may please the one who enlisted him to serve.

To be entangled is to be twisted and mixed up in a manner that makes it difficult to pull out or separate yourself. Many threads, ropes, and wires easily get entangled. Undoing an entanglement is difficult and stressful and sometimes impossible. What are you entangled in?

Entanglement refers to a complicated situation you find yourself in. A situation that proves difficult to get out of. A situation where you find it difficult to distance yourself because it seems everything is related. What are you entangled in?

An entanglement could also refer to a relationship that involves so many people in a way that is not easy to explain when exposed. Mind-boggling, shocking, and difficult to make head or tail of it. Relating with more than one person easily leads to an entanglement. Trying to please all multiple partners during one holiday can lead to entanglement. What are you entangled in?

Apostle Paul tells Timothy that both of them are soldiers in the army of Christ. Paul further tells Timothy that in military tradition and discipline, soldiers completely avoid getting entangled in civilian affairs for that would offend their commanders. Therefore, as a soldier of Christ, Paul tells Timothy to avoid getting entangled in non-religious affairs. In other words, be careful where you get entangled. What are you entangled in?

In other words, you can get entangled in military affairs but not civilian affairs. You can get entangled in church issues, or religious issues and that is ok. There is where you can get entangled and where you shouldn’t even be found. What are you entangled in?

If a criminal syndicate is unearthed and your name as a believer features as a key person of interest, you are entangled in wrong things. If haters are listed, if racists are listed, if tribalists are listed, if corrupt people are listed, and your name features, you are entangled in wrong things. What are you entangled in?

Ephesians 5:3
But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people.

1 Corinthians 6:18
Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body.

Sexual immorality is one of those things we should not get entangled in. The Bible says not even a hint. The Bible says to flee from it. Do not get entangled in trending sex scandals or nude pictures during rounds. Do not get entangled in scandals of dying during the act of sexual immorality because of using sex-enhancing drugs. Do not get entangled. What are you entangled in?

Revelation 18:4
Then I heard another voice from heaven say:
“‘Come out of her, my people,’
so that you will not share in her sins,
so that you will not receive any of her plagues;

God’s final message to the world is, do not get entangled with the world. Come out of her my people. Come out of the world. Come out of hypocrisy. Come out of erratic church attendance. Come out of sinful living. Come out of a prayerless life. Come out of involvement in witchcraft etc., do not get entangled, come out! What are you entangled in?

Save us from the wrong entanglement in Jesus’ name, Amen!
