Mark 4:27
Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how.
Mark chapter four has several parables. The first one is the parable of the sower. The second one is the parable of the growing seed. The third one is the parable of the Mustard seed. In between the parables are explanations and other events that Jesus was involved in. Our focus today is on the second parable in this chapter. The parable of the growing seed!
The parable of the growing seed is in Mark 4:26-29. The parable explains the kingdom of God. It compares the kingdom of God with a man who plants seeds in the ground or scatters seeds on the ground. Then the seed grows until it matures. Once the seed has matured or ripened, the man comes and harvests it, because it is time for harvest.
Our focus today is on verse twenty-seven. The Bible tells us that this man who plants may not know what really happens to the seed. Unknown to him, the seed sprouts and grows. He doesn’t know exactly how it sprouts, grows, and matures, but it happens. Whether he is absent or present the seed keeps making progress unknown to him. Day or night the seed makes its journey towards growth and maturity. He planted the seed and doesn’t know what is happening, but it is happening anyway. You don’t know but it’s happening!
God through Jesus Christ has planted the seed of the Kingdom of God here on earth. We may not see and we may not be aware, but the seed is growing towards harvest. We may not know how, but God’s work is progressing. With or without our contribution, God’s work moves on. You don’t know but it’s happening!
If you are waiting to understand everything in order to join the church, you may be forever too late. If you are waiting to see some type of changes and growth in the church for you to be part of it, you may never see it but it’s happening. If you think that the result of the ministry of the church and its empowered people can be assessed you are wrong. You may not see but it is happening. You may not know but it is happening. You don’t know but it’s happening!
In our day-to-day lives, we touch people and affect them for life. We knowingly or unknowingly hurt others and become a blessing to others. Whether we see it or not, it is happening. Whether we know it or not, it is happening. Your life has a daily impact on other lives. You don’t know but it’s happening!
When we see the final product, we easily forget that there are many things that happened and we may never get to know. We see and admire the final result, but there are many things that we don’t know but are happening. A final product is a result of many private meetings and struggles. You don’t know but it’s happening!
Your children are becoming more and more like you. They are picking your habits and ways daily. Your children are learning how to deal with life by seeing how you are dealing with life. Your children are forming permanent opinions of you based on how you behave towards them. You don’t know but it’s happening!
The people you interact with are forming opinions about you. They are deciding how they will treat you in the future when you will be in need. They are shaping approaches and attitudes they will use on you when eventually you are non-threatening and vulnerable. For now, you are all-powerful and scary and you may not know, but how you will be handled in the future is being prepared now. If your juniors, domestic workers, and poor people around you ever rise to power that has resources, how they will treat you is being defined now by how you treat them. You don’t know but it’s happening!
How students will treat us in the future when they make it in life and are in charge as we retire is being determined today by how we treat them. They may not voice it, but it’s happening. They may not know but they will remember. When they no longer have to worry about how you will grade them, how will they treat you? You don’t know but it’s happening!
Choices and habits today are determining if you will be comfortable or desperate in the future. That habit of watching movies instead of studying is shaping you into a procrastinator. The discipline you are picking at home and in school is what will give you an edge over others. Therefore a bright or dull future is being shaped right before you in your daily activities. You don’t know but it’s happening!
Unknown to us many good and bad things could be happening based on our choices today. Our future life is being shaped daily. What will happen to us is being prepared today by our daily actions. May God grant us wisdom and grace so that we don’t do regrettable things, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
