Marriage Can Ruin It Marriage Can Fix It

Genesis 6:2 – the sons of God saw that the daughters of humans were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose.

Genesis 6:3 – Then the LORD said, “My Spirit will not contend with humans forever, for they are mortal; their days will be a hundred and twenty years.

Genesis chapter six introduces the climax of sin that God had to disrupt with a flood. Since the creation of Adam and Eve, and their fall into sin, things grew worse and God had to destroy humanity and everything else.

This chapter begins by telling us that one of the points where things went wrong was in marriage. The writer tells us that sons of God married daughters of men. After that type of marriage, God responded by reducing the lifespan of humanity to 120 years.

Let me tell you the story of how God got fed up with humanity and decided to kill everyone and everything. As human beings increased on earth, a marriage of sons of God and daughters of men took place.

Matthew 22:30 – At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.

Sons of God can’t be angels, because angels have no gender. Jesus tells us that angels are not classified into male or female and they do not engage in marriage. Sons of God who married daughters of men are not angels.

Sons of God are people who had been born in an ancestry, probably of Seth, who had chosen faithfulness to God as a way of life. Daughters of men could be a reference to ancestry of Cain who lived in defiance of God. The demarcation is on the faith status more than ancestry.

People who were faithful to God, did a shocking thing, they married people who were unfaithful to God. That is where things started going wrong. Before God responded with annihilation by flood, He first fired a warning shot by reducing lifespan of human beings.

The world had degenerated so much to an extent that people dedicated to God found no problem marrying people defiant against God. Could it get any worse? That is how the flood came about. That is what the writer wants us to know in a chapter introducing the flood.

Genesis 6:4 – The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.

The marriages that offended God resulted into children who offended God. The Nephilim, the giants, the renown people. These are the people God targeted in the deluge. God brought a flood to destroy the children who resulted from these marriages that offended Him. The Nephilim no longer exist because God eliminated them.

We got into trouble in many ways, but one of them was bad marriages. Marriage between believers and unbelievers. The marriages displeased God and He punished us by reducing our lifespan.

The bad marriages resulted in children that offended God. As children who offended God increased, God couldn’t take it anymore, and He brought a flood to destroy them. Bad marriages and the resultant children were a symptom of a totally evil world. Bad marriages and the resulting children caused a short lifespan and annihilation by flooding.

Bad marriage can cause God to reduce your lifespan. Bad marriages can give people so much stress that their health degenerates and they die early. If God hasn’t approved your marriage, it can reduce your lifespan.

Children from bad marriages can bring disaster upon society. They may be giants academically or financially but dangerous and destructive. They can be technologically advanced but heartless and corrupt. They can can be giants in one way but immoral and incorrigible. Giants who will destroy themselves or get destroyed by God.

Genesis 6:18 – But I will establish my covenant with you, and you will enter the ark —you and your sons and your wife and your sons’ wives with you.

When God chose Noah, He also chose His family. The marriage of Noah was approved. The marriage of Noah’s sons was approved. God fixes the world through approved correct marriages. Where marriage ruined it, God used marriage to fix it!

Matthew 24:37 – As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.

Matthew 24:38 – For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark;

When Jesus retells the story of Noah many hundreds of years later, He points at marriage as an aspect that can’t be ignored. The flood story cannot be separated from the bad marriages of those who were destroyed and the good marriages of those who got saved. Marriage can ruin it and marriage can fix it!

“The influence of an ill-regulated family is widespread, and disastrous to all society. It accumulates in a tide of evil that affects families, communities, and governments...” AH 33.3

“No one can so effectually ruin a woman’s happiness and usefulness, and make life a heartsickening burden, as her own husband; and no one can do one hundredth part as much to chill the hopes and aspirations of a man, to paralyze his energies and ruin his influence and prospects, as his own wife. It is from the marriage hour that many men and women date their success or failure in this life, and their hopes of the future life...” AH 43.1

“Marriage is something that will influence and affect your life both in this world and in the world to come. A sincere Christian will not advance his plans in this direction without the knowledge that God approves his course...” AH 43.3

May God help us in making the right decisions on who to marry or get married to. May God intervene in our marriages to save us from being ruined and producing terrible children. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
