Proverbs 4:25
Let your eyes look straight ahead;
fix your gaze directly before you.
King Solomon had unequaled wisdom according to God who gave it to him, 1 Kings 4:29-34. King Solomon wrote a major section of the book of proverbs. In this book, he advises his children and readers on how to live a successful life.
The book of Proverbs is laden with nuggets to live by. If we just did what is in the book of Proverbs we would live far better lives than we are living today. If we read the book of Proverbs daily, our minds would be wired differently toward excellence.
We read quotes from different wise people and admirable people. Quotes we read and listen to may have some truth for some time. However, the book of Proverbs is inspired by God the Holy Spirit and its relevance and truth are for all time. We do well to read and apply the wisdom in the book of Proverbs.
The proverb of our consideration today is among the last three of the fourth chapter of this book. They all emphasize the need to live a focused life. The instructions King Solomon gives us from his inspired hand is that we should be focused.
Proverbs 4:25-27
(25) Let your eyes look straight ahead;
fix your gaze directly before you.
(26) Give careful thought to the paths for your feet
and be steadfast in all your ways.
(27) Do not turn to the right or the left;
keep your foot from evil.
The message is simple. Whatever you do will definitely succeed if you don’t lose focus. Do not be distracted from your goal. Whatever you do works if you fix your gaze on it!
To fix your gaze is to look at something steadfastly without blinking or responding to distraction. Fix your gaze on your studies. Do not be distracted by friends and have fun. Fix your gaze on good grades. Fix your gaze so that you don’t notice if rules are stringent, if the food is good or if sports equipment is sufficient. It works if you fix your gaze!
Fix your gaze on Jesus. Fix your gaze until the desires of this world lose their attractiveness. Fix your eyes on Jesus until your bad habits are defeated and destroyed from your life. Fix your eyes on Jesus until the end when He saves us to eternity. Christianity is potent and possible. It works if you fix your gaze!
“Turn your eyes upon Jesus
Look full in his wonderful face
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim
In the light of his glory and grace.”
“1 There’s life in a look at the sacred cross,
Jesus has said, “Look unto me;”
Earth with its riches is only dross,
Bright treasures beyond in the cross I see.
Chorus:
In a look there’s life for thee,
In a look at Calvary;
Blessed thought, Salvation free,
By a look at Calvary.”
Fix your gaze on your relationships. Adjust and change what you can to make things better. Fix your gaze so that you are not tempted to attempt the futile effort of changing your partner. Fix your gaze until it’s clear if it’s not working and you move on without looking back. Fix your gaze until you bond and become true friends. It works if you fix your gaze!
Fix your gaze on saving and investment. Do not be distracted by impulse needs. Do not be distracted by pyramid schemes. Fix your gaze until you break even. Fix your gaze until you master the market. It works if you fix your gaze!
Anything and everything works if we fix our gaze. The problem is that we quickly and easily get distracted. We don’t finish what we started. A hunter must chase the rabbit. If you keep going after every rabbit that pops out of the bush, you will work hard, get tired, and with nothing to show. The solution is to fix your gaze until it works or you are very clear that it won’t work. May God help us to fix our gaze, even on Him, in Jesus’s name, Amen!
