What comment would be made about your family? The historian who did the book of Chronicles presents a genealogy. As he lists the families and their contribution to the military, he also makes a comment on something unique about each family.
We may not know the people listed in each family. The lists of families and their descendants may be boring to read. However, the comments made about various families tells a lot about what can easily stand out in a family.
Some families were just listed and the number of soldiers they contributed given. Nothing unique. Nothing else memorable. Just that!
The families highlighted in our selected scripture reading today, shows some comments about those families. One family produced chiefs. All their sons became chiefs. They had leadership skills. Other families were in agreement that brothers from one family could lead them because they stood out as excellent chiefs.
Others were known for having many wives and children. That is all. Nothing else. They contributed greatly to the army because of that.
Sons of Jedaiel were also blessed with leadership skills. They were all heads of families. When leaders were chosen to lead families, they selected sons of Jedaiel. There must have been something unique to warrant them being chosen as heads of families.
Another family had a daughter who built cities and communities even to her name. This is a family that lost sons and later got another son. This family is however recognised for the contribution of their daughter, Sheerah. The girl made the family to stand out amongst other families.
Finally in this chapter is the family of Asher. This family had a combination of everything good happening to them. They were known as heads of families, they were known as choice men. Outstanding unique, sought after, that is choice men. All from one family. They were also not just warriors but brave warriors. Known for bravery in battle. All from one family. Lastly the same family was made of outstanding leaders. Not just leaders like many other leaders, they were outstanding leaders. All from one family!
God blesses a family for it to stand out. A part from the blessings of God, parenting contributes to how a family stands out. The influence of siblings over each other also contributes to a family standing out.
Our families will stand out by God’s grace but we must pray about it and put effort towards it. We must be intentional. May greatness be our portion, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
