Hosea 4:14
“I will not punish your daughters
when they turn to prostitution,
nor your daughters-in-law
when they commit adultery,
because the men themselves consort with harlots
and sacrifice with shrine prostitutes —
a people without understanding will come to ruin!
If someone commits sin, whoever it is, we expect that they will be punished by God. It is therefore startling to hear God say that He will not punish our daughters who commit sin. The shocking aspect is that, God is not responding to the repentance of our daughters. God is actually talking about daughters who are deep in sin and indifferent to spiritual matters. Daughters who are actively sinning against God. I will not punish your daughters who have committed sin!
It will be understandable if the daughters in question were repentant and pleading for mercy. We would immediately understand this as God’s act of grace. When God says that He will not punish the daughters engaged in sin, it is not an act of grace. God is speaking in anger. God is passing to us a point we shouldn’t forget by making such a controversial statement about sinners who deserve punishment. I will not punish your daughters who have committed sin!
In our text today, God tells Israelites that their daughters actively engaged in sin will not be punished. God says that they will not be punished because they have learnt the sin from adults. God therefore shows His fairness. He says everyone not just the daughters will be punished.
This was a society where people blamed each other and thought others were more sinful than themselves. Fathers go out with prostitutes then come back to threaten their daughters who are prostitutes that they should stop, or else God will punish them. God responds by saying I will not punish your daughters when they engage in prostitution.
God is addressing the problem of double standards. A thief threatens other thieves with dire consequences. God tells that thief that He will not punish the other thieves.
A community of corrupt people threaten their leaders who are corrupt that God will punish them. God responds to them by saying that He will not punish their corrupt leaders. I will not punish daughters who commit sin!
People who stole exams and fraudulently excelled are now threatening their children and students that they must be honest or else God will punish them. God responds by saying that He will not punish them. I will not punish your daughters who commit sin.
We have no moral authority to condemn or threaten anyone in God’s name for doing what we did and have never repented. God says He will not punish them as we wish. Until we repent and totally and genuinely quit those bad ways, we have no authority to threaten others in God’s name. God says He will not punish people as we wish. I will not punish your daughters when they commit sin.
Acts 15:10
Now then, why do you try to test God by putting on the necks of Gentiles a yoke that neither we nor our ancestors have been able to bear?
God hates double standards as we have shown above. Do not except from others what you can’t do it yourself. God says He will not support double standards. You want your daughters to be moral, yet you are immoral yourselves? I will not punish your daughters when they commit sin!
The problem here also is holier than thou attitude. One sinner feels holier than another. One sinner threatens another sinner that God will punish them. God refuses to punish one sinner and make it look like indeed the other one is holier. God says I will not punish your daughters and make sinful fathers look holier than daughters. I will not punish your daughters when they sin!
Matthew 7:4-5
(4) How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? (5) You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
The other problem is hypocrisy. How can a sinner enjoying the same sin, threaten another sinner with divine punishment? You never give tithes and offerings and you threaten those who don’t give? God says He will not punish them. I will not punish your daughters when they commit sin!
That text ends by saying everyone will be punished. God doesn’t allow double standards, He will punish everyone. God doesn’t promote holier than thou attitude, and He hates hypocrisy. God will punish everyone and not just daughters. The whole community of corrupt people will perish and not just the leaders they threaten. I will punish everyone!
We should not look at the sins of others but our own sins. We should repent our sins first. We should examine ourselves before condemning others. You cannot be high handed within your family and then accuse leaders of high handedness. God calls the people to examine themselves. In other words God says if I punish others as you wish, I will have to punish you too!
Others are sinful and wicked. We condemn them on social media. God out of mercy says He will not punish our sexual perverts, our thieves, our murderers and our corrupt officials. God will not punish our bad spouses, children, parents, neighbors and relatives. God will not punish our enemies. Why? Because if He punishes them, we too will be punished. God asks all of us to repent or suffer punishment together!
Dear God forgive me for condemning others. Help me focus on myself. Save me from sin. Save me from myself, in Jesus’s name, Amen!
