Hosea 4:4
“But let no one bring a charge,
let no one accuse another,
for your people are like those
who bring charges against a priest.
The blame game has two sides. First is that one refuses to accept that he or she is wrong. One refuses to acknowledge any responsibility even for what they are responsible for. Secondly, one blames another person. He or she finds someone to blame.
The intention of the blame game is to be seen as clean by pointing out how dirty others are. Blame is self-justification. The blame game is showing how good you are by announcing how bad others are. A blame game is when a guilty person diverts attention to someone else.
The blame game is showing loyalty by reporting those who are not loyal. The blame game is tarnishing other people so that you are preferred over them. The aim of the blame game is to divert attention from your wrongdoing and accusing another person.
The blame game is selfishness. It is selfish because you only think of your own good. It is selfish because you do not care if another person is falsely declared guilty and suffers, yet you should be the one suffering.
The blame game is driven by the guilty, the incompetent, and the evil-hearted. The blame game is also driven by those who listen to blame and without proper verification, they act. Corruption is driven by both the one who gives a bribe and the one who receives it. The blame game is driven by the one who accuses others and the one who entertains by listening and believing the accuser.
In our text today God tells Israelites that they are so evil and they will be punished. One of the sins in Israel is the blame game. God orders that the blame game must end immediately. The community will only be restored if, among other things, the blame game comes to an end.
God tells the people of Israel that they are so evil that even in the blame game they target priests. To divert attention from their own evil, they point out that priests are evil. God says the blame game must end!
New Living Translation
“Don’t point your finger at someone else and try to pass the blame! My complaint, you priests, is with you.
Contemporary English Version
Don’t accuse just anyone! Not everyone is at fault. My case is against you, the priests.
In another version, it ends by saying God blames the priests. God blames the priests for entertaining blame game. If the leader stops wasting time listening to accusers, the blame game will end. God says that in this matter of blame game, He blames the priests, who are the leaders for encouraging it. Are you guilty of encouraging a blame game in the pretext of receiving reports and intelligence on what people against you are doing? God has a case against you for encouraging the blame game!
The problem with the blame game is that no one acknowledges wrongdoing. The problem with the blame game is that someone may be unfairly accused and treated without a fair hearing. A fair hearing requires that the accuser faces the one he or she accuses. If the accuser is anonymous, that is the blame game. The one blamed will never get a fair hearing or treatment. The blame game is sin. God orders that the blame game must stop and leaders should lead the way by not entertaining it.
Revelation 12:10
“…For the accuser of our brothers and sisters,
who accuses them before our God day and night,
has been hurled down.
Satan is the master in the blame game. Those engaging in blame games are engaged in diabolical activities. Any leader allowing a blame game has allowed satanic activities. Day and night you listen to accusers reporting others and you believe and act? The chief accuser is Satan.
James 4:17
If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.
Now that we know the blame game is wrong, it would be wrong to continue blaming others. It would be wrong to continue entertaining the blame game. God has ordered that the blame game stops. To continue the blame game is a sin!
If someone is wrong go to him or her to help rectify the problem. If you report the person to the authorities, be willing to face them during the hearing of the case. If you cannot do any of this, you are engaged in the blame game that God has declared sinful.
May God save us from blaming others. May God save us from entertaining blame game. May God save us from accusers and authorities who entertain them. May God save our community from the sin of the blame game, in Jesus’s name, Amen!
