Judges 6:27 – So Gideon took ten of his servants and did as the LORD told him. But because he was afraid of his family and the townspeople, he did it at night rather than in the daytime.
When God called Gideon He gave him a dangerous assignment. His core assignment was to destroy Midianites who had made Israel suffer. However before that Gideon was supposed to destroy the idols and gods in his father’s family.
Gideon’s father hosted the idols that were worshipped by the community. This is the worship that offended God. This is the worship that made God to bring Midianites to punish Israel.
From the home where offensive idol worship was done, God chose His servant. God knows a good person who may be inadvertently stuck between wicked people. Human beings would selectively dismiss the whole family but God searches each heart separately.
God has and knows faithful people even from families practicing witchcraft. God has and knows faithful people from families engaged in crime. If you are faithful to God but stuck in bad circumstances, be patient, God will come for you.
God sends Gideon to destroy Midianites, but He tells him to begin by destroying his father’s idols. God tells him to destroy the pagan worship platforms and replace it with Altars of the God of heaven, the true God, the God of Israel.
Gideon is afraid because destroying these places of worship would enrage not just his father’s family but the whole neighborhood and community that worships there. Gideon knows this is dangerous. Yet Gideon knows that this must be done.
Gideon decides to do it at night when people are asleep. Gideon couldn’t do it alone. He asked his servants to help him. It’s his servants who later exposed that he is the one who did it. Whatever the case Gideon obeyed God.
God gave Gideon an assignment that was dangerous and he had to figure out the safest way to do it. We need wisdom when serving God. We do not walk foolishly into trouble just because we are serving God. We do not expose ourselves to risks and danger just because we are serving God. Do it at night if it is safer!
Nathan was told to tell David that his sin of killing Uriah and marrying Bathsheba was bad. Nathan looked for a clever story and analogy that would be safe to introduce the topic. God gives an assignment that can be dangerous if done openly at day time. Do it at night if necessary!
Do not confront government officials foolishly just because you have a correct biblical position or assignment from God. Do not dare a violent person just because you have a right. Some have dared violent spouses, parents, relatives, criminals, and ended up getting killed. Being right does not suspend the wisdom of doing it safely.
Do not dare someone to harm you. Do not dare someone to kill you. Do not dare someone to fire you. Find a wise and safe way. Gideon did it at night!
Don’t say do whatever you want God will take care of me. Jesus refused to jump from the top of the temple. The devil told Him that angels will rescue Him, but Jesus rejected that foolish action. Being on God’s side isn’t a license to engage in obvious life threatening talks or actions. Act wisely like Gideon. Do it at night if necessary!
Shadrack, Meshack, and Abednego dared king Nebuchadnezzar because there was no other safer and wiser way. Take the safest path that you will serve God and preserve yourself. If there is no safer way to serve God, take the risk and serve Him anyway. Face the danger. Take the cross like Jesus. Be stoned like Stephen. If there is no safer and wiser way!
May God grant us wisdom to know when to take risks for Him and when to evade the risks like Gideon. Whichever way, May we be faithful to God’s assignment, in Jesus’s name, Amen!
