Isaiah 9:1 (NIV) – Nevertheless, THERE WILL BE NO MORE GLOOM for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan—
“There will be no more gloom…” this is the promise God gave through prophet Isaiah. This is a message to everyone in distress. “There will be no more gloom….”
Zebulun and the land of Naphtali are small sections of the land of Galilee. These sections of Galilee were punished by God because of their sins. During the punishment they were in great distress. God promises that though the distress was in a small section of Galilee, the joy and happiness will be all over Galilee. “There will be no more gloom….”
Pain and suffering in one section of your life, but God promises a joy and happiness that will encompass every aspect of your life. Pain and suffering academically, but joy and happiness in your physical health, social health, spiritual life, in addition to the academic. “There will be no more gloom….”
Are you in pain and suffering in one section of your life? Is health your pain point? Is spiritual guilt your pain point? Is school work your pain point? Is relationships both marriage and otherwise your pain point? Are finances your pain point? God promises that, though you suffered in one or two sections of your life, things will change for the better in your entire life. “There will be no more gloom….”
The Bible verse tells us that the divine promises will cover the way of the sea, beyond Jordan. This refers to the entire territory beyond Galilee. God will causes joy and happiness that will be contagious. Joy and happiness beyond our section that suffered to our wholistic self. Joy and happiness beyond our wholistic self to many others near us and those far away. Because of what God will do to us, our distress will end, then Joy and happiness will spread everywhere. “There will be no more gloom….”
Galilee was neighboring gentiles. Galilee became a point where unacceptable and evil practices were adopted from gentiles by Israelites. Galilee became the entry point of sin and a broken relationship with God. This same Galilee is where God promises in Isaiah 9 that it will no longer bring darkness but light. This same Galilee where evil and suffering started, is where salvation will begin. The Messiah will come from Nazareth in Galilee. “There will be no more gloom….”
Isaiah 9:2 (NIV) – The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.
Galilee that brought darkness to the entire Israel, will bring light to the whole world. God will change the fortunes of people from darkness to light. “There will be no more gloom….”
Isaiah 9:6-7 (NIV) – 6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.
This same despised Galilee is where the Saviour will come from. Nazareth in Galilee. The best king will come from a place considered the worst place. “There will be no more gloom….”
John 1:46 (NIV) – “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked…
It was a long drawn conclusion that Nazareth in Galilee can never produce anything good. Nazareth in Galilee was a hopeless place spiritually, mentally, physically, socially, financially, etc. Yet God promised through Isaiah that the best gift to humanity will come from this place that was once in distress. “There will be no more gloom….”
Our situation today could be like that of Galilee. Dark and hopeless. Nothing good in our lives. Misery all around us. God has a promise today and He wants you to take it to heart and believe it. “There will be no more gloom….” May it be so, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
